March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and we want to spotlight three great reads that we feel many self advocates and advocates for others will love, whether you're a caregiver, healthcare professional or work on a legislative level.
1. Being Human: Judy Heumann, the mother of the disability rights movement, chronicles the fight from the 1970s through the ADA and beyond. Very readable, very human.
2. A Disability History of the United States: Written by Kim E Nielson, the first book to cover the entirety of U.S. disability history, from pre-1492, placing disability experiences at the center of the American narrative.
3. Disability Visibility: Curated by the late self-advocate Alice Wong, an anthology of essays by 37 writers with disabilities, providing an intersectional view of what it means to be a disabled person in the 21st century.
