Hi @zohrankmamdani@nycmayor - publicly owned grocery stores are great, but have you heard about community food co-ops?
@cooperationtown is supporting people across England to set up neighbourhood buying groups on their streets and housing estates. Our members collectively save almost £2M a year on their food costs, while learning to become community organisers!
Cooperation Town food co-ops are not stores (there’s no rent, managers or a ton of admin and logistics and they def don’t cost $30M to set up) - they are small hyper-local structures, owned and self organised by members, who share all the responsibility of running the group.
Check out www.cooperation.town to find out more and drop us a line if you wanna chat about how we can help New Yorkers to start their own community food co-ops.

Our Learning Garden at Cooperation Town Hub in Gospel Oak will be open to the public on Tuesday 21 April, as part of the @goodtogrowuk programme.
@cooperationtowngarden produces food for the community 12 months a year 🥦Check out what's growing in the veg beds and the greenhouse and learn about ways to get involved.
Wanna get your hands dirty? We have the tools!
Our growing coordinator, Chris, will guide you through the different activities and share tips for plants you can grow at home, in a balcony or on your windowsill.
We will be open tomorrow 12noon - 4pm.
See you in the garden!
Join Cooperation Town members and workers at the national housing demo this Saturday, 18 April, in central London.
Look out for the Coop Town banner!
Why are we demonstrating?
- High rents push working class communities out of our neighbourhoods, while wealthy people move in
- Unhealthy homes are making us and our kids sick, stressed and isolated
- Our community spaces are being sold off to build more luxury flats for the rich
- Landlords are our class enemies
BUT it doesn’t have to be this way! Tenants around the world are organising to demand rent caps, more social housing and better rights for renters, not landlords.
That’s why this Saturday we’re joining thousands on the streets for the biggest housing demo of our lives!
Join us with your fellow co-op members, friends and neighbours. Kids are super welcome (there’s a families block).

If you’ve noticed your food bills going up over the last few years, you’re not alone! But as supermarkets put their prices up and we all feel the squeeze, what can we do about it?
Food co-ops offer a way to take back control over the food system and save money through community organising. Cooperation Town have already helped more than 50 groups get their own food co-ops up and running, and now they’re coming to Homerton!
Come and join us to learn everything you ever wanted to know about food co-ops and to get involved!
Date and time: Tuesday 24th February, 18:30

How food cooperatives are revolutionising the way communities access food 💪🏾
City Harvest community partner, @cooperationtown , empowers its community using the cooperative model, where food sharing has become a vital social connector and helps to make shopping more affordable for low-income households.
