Today I went to the Board of Police Commissioners meeting, and there were at least ten separate stories that deserve attention. The commission found out about the LAPD data breach from the media! Chief McDonnell continues to lie about protesters! He lies about the victims of LAPD violence, too, like Elias Real! The Police Protective League is openly threatening community organizers on social media! Also, the commission voted months ago for a massive expansion of the LAPD’s drone surveillance program, so today they were glad to have the chance to ask some questions about the kinds of things the LAPD uses drones for!
I listed ten separate stories from this one three-hour meeting on my newsletter, which is linked where people link things on this app!

👮🏼♂️LAPD chief doubles down on refusal to enforce mask ban at Police Commission meeting
Note: Some commenters use explicit language.
Police Commission President Teresa Sánchez-Gordon asked LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell on Tuesday to clarify the department’s position “to the commission and to the community and public,” following his statements last week that the department would not enforce the mask ban.
Meeting attendees laughed as McDonnell doubled down, saying enforcing the laws would be “detrimental to public safety in Los Angeles” and that he would wait for a pending federal court case before taking further action.
Fact check: Authors of the bills say the laws took effect Jan. 1, 2026 and should be enforced.
The Police Commission meets Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. at 100 W. First St., Los Angeles. Read notes from previous meetings at thelalocal.org/documenters.
