Figured the best way to start this account would be with a lil introduction! My name is Constance, and I’m a photographic artist based in San Jose, CA. I occasionally work with collage and other media, but photography is my one true love. Found images, made images, manipulated images, I love them all. Hope y’all like some of what you see. Looking forward to sharing more work with you! 💕

Artist Spotlight: Constance Button Constance Button is an artist who takes an intuitive approach to image-making by incorporting sensibilities from both digital and analog photo processes to better understand and admire the ways that human touch, emotion, and history can find their way into the memories we have, the tools we use, and the experiences we live through. On different days throughout the 5th Annual Experimental Exhibition, genARTS Silicon Valley is thrilled to introduce you to the different artists whose work is part of “Interwoven: The Threads That Bind (US)” at Noble Workshop and Gallery in Downtown San José this October from the 3rd through 30th. Follow @genartssv every day this month to meet more and more of the artists. 🧑‍🎨 Graphics related to the 5th Annual Experimental Exhibition, including this photo frame, are designed by @nancyestrella.visual Massive shoutout and gratitude to Nancy. 🎨 genARTS’ 5th Annual Experimental Exhibition “Interwoven: The Threads That Bind (US)” is presented in partnership with Local Color and Noble Workshop and Gallery, supported in part by a take pART grant from the City of San José. @‌sjculture @localcolorsj @noble.dtsj #genartssv #ExperimentalExhibition #interwoven #ArtisticExploration #BoundariesAtNUMU #southbay #santaclaracounty #artopencall #bayareaartists #localcolorsj #genarts

✺✺✺ SOUND • VISION • CRAFT • STORY. A speakeasy series for San José. A vibe made by and for #local community. 1️⃣ WEEK OUT! Every First Thursday from June through September, we partner with San José’s original speakeasy to celebrate artistry across mediums. 📣 The Haberdasher Shows kicks off June 5— a summer series of jazz fusion, pop-up photo exhibits, craft cocktails, and stories that move. We’re incredibly proud to launch with two dynamic artists: 📸 Stephanie Barajas (@stephroars ) is a Mexican immigrant, theatre artist, photographer, and arts worker based in San José. Her photography has been featured at Art Share L.A., Oakland Photo Workshop, MACLA (@macla_sanjose ), and more, with publications in Content Magazine (@contentmag ) and The Thread Magazine (@thethreadmag ). She currently supports artists across California through her work at the Center for Cultural Innovation. 📸 Constance Button (@thatmustbenigelwiththebrie ) is a photographic artist based in San José whose work explores reverence, experimentation, and play. Though rooted in photography, her multidisciplinary practice spans mediums. She holds a BFA in Photography from San José State University, and her work has been exhibited throughout the Bay Area. A Look Thru Your Lens: Episode 102 Artist: @thatmustbenigelwiththebrie @constance_makes Film: Kodak Gold Camera: Pentax K1000 ______________________ 1) What motivated you to pick up a camera? • In the simplest sense, the motivation to pick up a camera came from the desire to make my surroundings more interesting. I had a fairly sheltered upbringing, so I spent a lot of time in my own company outside of school while growing up. I was introduced to photography in art class, and it offered me an outlet to engage with the world differently. It introduced me to a new way of looking at things. I wanted to find the most distinct details anywhere I went. There was so much more to witness after I started photography and my life felt more energized because of it. I still feel that energy today when I pick up a camera, which is why photography remains my favorite medium to this day. _________________ 2) What were your primary focuses as you captured these images? • When I first heard about the project, I decided to approach the idea very literally. What does *my* San Jose look like? I wanted to capture my favorite details of my home, my neighborhood, and the details I notice on the routes I usually walk. I had the thought that if many photographers from different neighborhoods took this approach, it could be possible to somewhat map what San Jose looks like at this point in time, sort of like a time capsule. And that idea was intriguing to me. That made me think about the sorts of locations and details that feel specific to my experience of San Jose. San Jose is a city that has changed a lot, and I wanted to document certain things that I cherish that may not be here long term as this city continues to change. _______________

A lil recap of my show from 2022 at Chromatic. Such a whirlwind of time, a quick burst of energy after a long time of not making art. My first time exhibiting work since my thesis show in 2019. I was nervous to show this body of work because it was so different from what I’d done before. But it felt really good. It was the first time I’d been excited about making in a few years. Was a great experience, grateful for the generosity of everyone involved and that I was able to sell a piece from the show 🙏

R&D for Upon Waking last year…spent a lot of time elbows deep in paper scraps in the garage, which affectionately became known as “being in the pile.” Had a lot of frames and images I’d been sitting on for years. It was very gratifying to be able to find the right fit for stuff that’d been brewing in inventory for a long time. For folks who recall from the show, a lot of these pieces did not end up how they started in these images. My favorite part of making anything is listening to what the work needs. It’ll always talk if you lend an ear.
