Discover @leuser_ecosystemleaf 🇮🇩 the newest member of the @conservationcollectiveorg global network. The Leuser Ecosystem on Sumatra is one of the world’s largest intact rainforests, sweeping from mountain to coast via cloud forest, lowland jungle and peat swamps. Covering over 10,000 square miles – an area nearly the size of Hawaii – this is the last place on Earth where orangutans, rhinos, elephants and tigers co-exist in the wild. Working to protect and restore Indonesia’s irreplaceable Leuser Ecosystem – Leuser Ecosystem Action Fund (LEAF) supports locally-led conservation to ensure the survival of endangered species, preserve biodiversity and support the people who depend on the rainforests. They work with community groups, landowners, and developers to restore nature, improve biodiversity, and protect green spaces and they give grants for local conservation projects and deliver ‘biodiversity net gain’ schemes (ensuring development improves nature overall) with local partners. Welcome to the @conservationcollectiveorg network @trustforoxfordshire 🇬🇧 Funding and supporting environmental projects in Oxfordshire, Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment (TOE) is on a mission to halt nature loss and reconnect people with the natural environment. They work with community groups, landowners, and developers to restore nature, improve biodiversity, and protect green spaces and they give grants for local conservation projects and deliver ‘biodiversity net gain’ schemes (ensuring development improves nature overall) with local partners. TOE is the first Associate member in the CC network, remaining a fully independent organisation while gaining access to CC’s fundraising support, partnerships, resources, and network connections. Daytime Leatherback Nesting on Colonaire (Gorse) Beach, St. Vincent 🐢🥚 On April 26th 2026 at around midday, the coastal community of Gorse was greeted by a leatherback making her way up the beach to nest. Leatherbacks are the largest sea turtles in the world and typically come ashore under the cover of night during their nesting season making this daytime encounter a special one. It was the very first time seeing a leatherback for some watching on and members of the nearby community stood in awe as the process unfolded. A special shoutout to our monitor Maria who quickly recognised the significance of the moment and requested additional support to help ensure the safety of the turtle and her eggs. Thanks to her quick actions and coordination our team of nearby monitors was able to respond and maintain a respectful and disturbance-free environment with a crowd of 30+ persons all watching, allowing her to nest without interruption and return safely to the sea. With the eggs safely laid, our team will continue to monitor and protect the nest in the weeks ahead where we are hopeful that they will successfully hatch. Moments like this are a powerful reminder of the importance of community-based conservation and the role our monitors play in protecting the sea turtles of SVG.
