This past week Morgan Cleary graduated from @miamirosenstiel Master of Professional Science (MPS) Program. I was fortunate to mentor her along with Dr. Dean Grubbs and @mikkshark through her research on pharmaceutical contamination in Nurse Sharks along Floridaās coastal waters, and I couldnāt be prouder of her growth and accomplishments.
Congratulations, Morgan! Iām excited to see where your career takes you!
Latest publication from Chris and colleagues now available open access in Fish and Fisheries! Find it in the latest issue :)
Congrats to Brandon Sosa on his first first-author publication! & in a leading journal in our field no less!
šø thanks Cass for many of the photos! @covascott

The Orca made a serious splash at the @thetritonnews event at Pier 66 š
Honestly, the best part?
Seeing the true enthusiasts, the ones who light up just stepping foot on the Orca. That kind of energy is what makes this industry so special.
Big thanks to @thetritonnews , @seakeepers ,@m.a.wash at @piersixtysix , and @nate777766 with @allpointsboats for bringing it all together. Always a great time when the right people are in the room.

I did my first fly-in with @oceanconservancy to meet for two days on Capitol Hill with Florida Congress members across party lines to discuss the importance of @noaa and why the Endangered Species Act matters for Floridaās wildlife, its waters, and its people. I was joined by incredible people who are passionate about ocean conservation, and we left with a win. The Endangered Species Amendment Act, which would have weakened protections for endangered wildlife, we came to fight was pulled from the House floor on Earth Day! This is proof that making noise works and that we can make a difference. As exhausting as the trip was with all the travel, meetings, and walking, I have come home feeling energized.

Guest Announcement - we welcome Brendan Talwar! He is a fisheries ecologist researching tropical and subtropical sharks and the fisheries that interact with them. In addition, he is a postdoctoral scholar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography - UC San Diego, where I work in the Semmens Lab on projects spanning bycatch mitigation, healthy seafood, and citizen science. Brendan is partnered with Dr. Chris Malinowski with their new venture Shark Docs, where they seek to use their appearance on Netflixās All the Sharks to educate students about sharks and their conservation worldwide. Tickets at #sharkcon #sharkdocs #allthesharks #sharkscience #sharkconservation
Speaker Announcement - Dr. Chris Malinowskiās career has been largely focused on studying how human activities affect aquatic ecosystemsāfrom the depths of the ocean to coastal waters, estuaries, and the Great Lakes. His work has taken him everywhere from studying microscopic zooplankton to researching some of the oceanās most iconic animals: sharks, sea turtles, marine mammals, and massive Goliath Grouper. Along the way, heās had the incredible opportunity to share this work through National Geographic, documentary films, Discovery Channelās Shark Week, and Netflixās hit series āAll the Sharks. GROUPERS IN CRISIS: New Research Reveals Management Failure
Dr. Chris Malinowski just published research with the IUCN Grouper & Wrasse Specialist Group (@iucn_official@iucnssc ), and the findings are alarming.
Building on his PhD work studying Atlantic Goliath Grouper ecology, spawning behavior, health, diet, and abundance patterns, Chris helped assess whether fishery management is actually protecting groupers worldwide.
Previous IUCN assessments (2007 & 2016) identified 17 threatened grouper species out of 160+ with overfishing as the main threat. This study, led by Sean Fennessy @ukzn , asked: Are management measures in place? And are they working?
š The sobering answer:
* 98% of grouper species have ineffective or no fishery management
* Only 3% have adequate management measures in place
* Management efforts don't match extinction risk levels
* Real catches are declining but hidden by misreported data
Their slow growth, late maturity, and predictable spawning make them easy targets for overfishing.
The message is clear: We need urgent action. Better management. Protected spawning sites. Reduced fishing pressure.
From Goliath Grouper in the Atlantic to other threatened species worldwide, Chris is working with many others to ensure that these critical reef predators survive.

š£ Join us Tuesday, February 10th at 6 PM for āTracking Ocean Predators: Marine Conservation in Actionā with Dr. Chris Malinowski.
Dr. Malinowski is a marine scientist and the Director of Research & Conservation at Ocean First Institute. Heāll take you behind the scenes of his work studying sharks, sea turtles, marine mammals, and massive Goliath grouper. His research spans from the open ocean to the Great Lakes and has reached global audiences through National Geographic and the Netflix series All the Sharks. He is also the co-founder of Shark Docs, a conservation-focused platform dedicated to protecting sharks and rays through science and education. Learn more at sharkdocs.org.
This lecture is free and open to everyone, and no advanced registration is required!

šA dad reached out to tell us his 9-year-old son watched All the Sharks and couldnāt stop talking about Shark Docs. Chris sent him a quick message. We were so excited to hear back! What a gem.
Moments like this remind us of the importance of connecting, sparking curiosity, and helping young people see a path into marine science and conservation. We need more people in this field to solve the enormous challenges we face.
Weāre pretty glad to be a small part of the process.
