Conscript Theatre

One year ago we made Surely Some Revelation is at Hand, the show that kicked off Conscript Theatre. SSRIAH was a show about technology, bureaucracy, and sending a rocket to the sun because that's where we think God will hear us. Two performers dressed as scientists (or maybe Mormons) are in a room (on a stage) setting up equipment, watching videos, listening to tapes, singing songs, trying to mend a printer, having a crisis of faith, acting out the past, rerecording history, and arguing with eachother. This metaphysical smorgasbord of reality and fiction is presented via a tapestry of physical performance, poetic text, video installation, historical fiction, speculative sci-fi, live camera work, and noise music. This is done through a miserably overcomplicated web of analog A/V equipment, which the performers desperately try to make work properly. Surely Some Revelation is at Hand asks us important questions like: "How has our media changed our relationship with history?" "Can faith ever be vindicated?" "How many plug sockets are in this theatre?" And "Wow, is that footage of the sun real?" - the answer to this one is yes. A night of the most exciting, creative and experimental new shows you can’t see anywhere else! Next Friday on the 22th May at 730pm, @conscripttheatre will be sharing their scratch Untitled Robot Story at @newdiorama A combat robot in a near future conflict wakes up with more memories than it’s supposed to have. A reconnaissance drone keeps looking slightly too long at kitchens, showers, hilltops. A couple tries to figure out love in times of war. But none of that is real, really. A messy blending of reality and fiction, unfolds through the onstage setup and operation of creative technology, experimental audio and video composition, poetry, dance, and (some) acting. Conscript Theatre @conscripttheatre is a techno-physical performance company bringing experimental technological arts onstage alongside physical performance, new writing and alternative dramaturgy. Created by Guy Rudin - He/Him Anastasiia Malnieva - She/Her Elia Fielden - Any/All Emile Belli - He/Him Heather Tennant - She/Her Nikos Kourous - He/Him Oscar Harding - He/Him Scratching the Itch is a scratch night dedicated to non-conventional performance pieces, as part of the Making It Work Initiative. Making It Work was started in 2023 by @ensemble_not_found___ and @halfpacetheatre , two migrant-led theatre companies based in the UK. Making It Work encourages migrant work in the UK by providing free and low cost workshops, mentorship, community-building events, scratch nights and showcases for migrant work. Most importantly, Making It Work is about envisioning a space in which new migrant artists in the UK feel supported and seen.
