We are told that progress is about forgetting the past, moving forward and individual achievement. E LALO-A-TAO questions this dominant narrative and reflects on the necessary movement and understanding between past, present and future.
E LALO-A-TAO reflects on the role of migrant-settlers to remember who they are, where they’ve come from, whose land they are on, and to whom they owe solidarity to. We can ‘go forward’ with amnesia and erasure or we can go towards the direction of dignity and justice. We make choices about where we stand, who we stand with and what we stand for. ‘

In February 2022, a body of work created by PNG artist Jeremiah Nueundorf was damaged by the QLD floods (alongside Serge Ah-Wong and Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman - see previous post)
The devastating flood waters swept through Yuriyal’s studio in West End, where both Jerry and Serge were also working from.
Despite the setback, Jerry is back to showcase his latest works - powerful political satire with pops of surrealism.

YURIYAL by @the_art_serge was supposed to be exhibited at our Ctrl+Alt+Del exhibition last year.
Sadly, the artwork was damaged when floods swept through the West End studio Serge was working from. We also had to cancel last year's exhibition due to the floods.
Serge shares,
'YURIYAL is a portrait of Yuriyal Eric Bridgeman, a Papua New Guinean artist...This portrait honours the support and mentorship I received whilst in Yuriyal’s studio...
With Yuriyal’s invitation to work from his art studio in West End, we struck up a special bond, creating artwork and holding an open studio event.
Just as we were building momentum and a body of work, we were hit by floods that swept through Brisbane in February 2022. The damage to our work was significant and devastating but we are figuring out ways to continue and create. I guess creating through love and hardship is what I/we know. It is what we do best.'
Whilst we're unable to showcase YURIYAL, you can see Serge's latest painting this weekend at our final Ctrl+Alt+Del exhibition at Metro Arts - Jan 21, 6pm.

Building on previous Ctrl+Alt+Del events, this iteration will be in the form of an exhibition and publication.
🎨 Throwback of a @_bindimu + @criticalmigrant collaborative ceremonial artwork created using rice, raang powder, betel leaves, candles and ochre.
Tanya + Bindimu share 'the ephemeral nature of the rangoli / kōlam / olpona reminds us to not be attached to materiality...but rather to appreciate the impermanence of life. Learning that everything must eventually end and return to the infinite. The ochre ceremony is a tradition on Minyangbal country used during a closing of gatherings and ceremonies.'

In Solomon Islands, 'belama' translates to frigate bird in the Roviana language. A skillful navigator possessing apotropaic qualities, the belama (frigate bird) brings good fortune to fishermen as it hovers over schools of fish and warns of impending storms. Like the belama, we must heed Mother Nature's warning signs.
