The first drum set lesson I ever had was with Ryan Anthony when I was about 16 or 17 years old. I had been playing drums since I was a young kid, but I knew nothing about jazz. At the time I was about to start playing in a jazz combo at a community college, and I didn’t want to show up knowing nothing about the style. I knew I needed to get with Ryan. I was already trying to see him play that black and concrete trick drum set every chance I could get. I knew he was the real deal. I was inspired by his great feel, creativity and very impressive reading chops. Ryan was the first drummer I aspired to be like, and I wouldn’t be a professional musician if weren’t for his presence in the music scene in my formative years. Years later sometime after 2020 he sold me that black and concrete trick drum set, and we would always say to each other “that kit has some mojo in it”. I’m happy to have a part of Ryan always with me in that kit. If you knew Ryan, you knew he was a positive, fun, and deep thinking cat. RIP, my friend. This morning a tune poured out of me as I was looking at that drum set of his. “The drums were concrete and black”
