New EP is out, it’s called When I Feel Better.
It was produced by Scott Zschomler and myself, engineered and mixed by Scott and mastered by Mark Chalecki.
My cousin Conner Reddan drew the album art. There were a few different versions and I loved them all but I loved this one right away and stuck with my gut.
When I picked up the guitar a few years ago I just wanted to be able to play some chords so I could mess with them in my MPC, but then I started to really love learning it and playing just to play. I remember calling out sick to work and driving to the movies listening to Joni Mitchell, thinking how nice it’d be to connect with an instrument in that way, and to not be using one just as a means of getting to a song. It felt like such a faraway goal, but it was a big moment and I’ve basically played every day since.
I still get a little embarrassed every time someone introduces me as a musician, and for years I’d correct people that I was “a songwriter but not a very good musician.” That insecurity has faded a lot in recent years, thankfully, but it still exists in me in places and maybe always will, and that’s ok. Writing on the guitar and playing not as a means to an end but just to play has been the greatest gift I’ve ever gotten from music. And luckily the songs still come.
When I started playing some of these ideas with Scott and talked about making something more acoustic, I was a little nervous about it. I felt like I wanted to stay in the cocoon as long as possible, to just keep learning and writing, but he added great things right away and played me the idea of what eventually became the title track and we were off recording again. I’m very happy we did, and to have this moment in time recorded. It’s one of my favorite things we’ve ever made. Maybe that’s the case every time but it’s definitely true this time.
