"So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine what a different world it would be if, in fact, we are learning reading, writing, arithmetic, and empathy." — Neil deGrasse Tyson

Yes!!! Empathy is the capacity that enables meaningful connection with others and the world around us. So, how do we learn empathy? This is the foundation of our workshops at Connection Lab - we start by learning and practicing how to connect.

The iconic and brilliant David Bowie had a huge album collection. In 2003 Vanity Fair tasked him with picking out his top 25 favorites.
It is an amazing eclectic list - as he says “there are no boundaries between the art forms.”
The list is a fun look at amazing talents in all its forms, spanning decades and disciplines. Some I recognize but others I have never heard of and want to listen to!
As we begin a new year, Bowie’s legacy and his picks feels like the perfect reminder: embrace each moment with intention, creativity, and full permission to be the artist of your own self-expression!!!
It's all a Lab of Connection - Connection Lab😊

Shopping for a process improvement system?
There are plenty to choose from: Six Sigma, Agility, TQM, LEAN Manufacturing, PDCA, BPM and more. A word of caution though, these systems can reveal or create as many problems as they solve.
The key to success? This video highlights how Honda’s achievements came down to a system of collaboration that respected each person’s autonomy and contributions to the production process —from leadership to the front lines.
Check out this FortNine clip on the 5 S's system for a lot of reasons including -- this 50 year old Honda featured belongs to Russ Hamilton, Connection Lab Founder and CEO.
Thank you FortNine - and go team!

Connection Lab 6 Box is a methodology of 6 questions that are designed to improve our communication and collaboration.
This includes, three primary questions and three primary relationships.
Today - the focus is on the three primary questions:
How am I showing up under stress today?
How do I want to show up under the stress of today?
(And, yes, I can choose rather than let stress choose for me!)
Then, if there is a gap between how I am showing up under stress and how I want to show up under stress — then, what do I want to get better at?
What are the practices and competencies I want to get better at?
And, with practice, we get better at everything - always have and always will…
Thanks for watching.😍

Theater comes from the Greek word theatron meaning “seeing place”
Audience comes for Latin audire meaning “hear”
Actor comes from Latin agere “do, act”
Feeling seen and heard is a fundamental human need - a primary function of the performing arts is rooted in the doing of the being seen and heard.
You can apply these principles in your everyday life.

In service of supporting our community we've started offering Performing Arts Classes at our neighborhood Rec Center. Retirees, teenagers, immigrants, all sorts of people partner up and do staged readings of classic comedies, plays and movie scripts. It's like Connection Lab lite - and it's a blast. We've made so many new friends and there is no feeling like helping people discover their voice, their confidence and ability to collaborate with strangers. Thanks to all involved - Go team!

It is not uncommon to think that we are naturally good at some things and not good at others. This way of thinking may actually jeopardize our success.
Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck challenges this notion asserting that our success is not solely tied to intelligence, talent or education. Instead, it’s the mindset we adopt —the way we confront life's challenges and our capacity to cultivate a growth mindset—specifically, the shift from a fixed to a growth mindset, valuing effort over inherent traits—that distinguishes successful individuals. This change fosters a love of learning and resilience to challenges. By reframing our perspective on achievements and recognizing the importance of effort, we can alter the alchemy of success. In her work with students, Dweck showed how praising effort over accomplishments improved students ability to acquire new skills and boost confidence, and better overcome setbacks. Citing Dweck's research and applying it to American work culture, in "Talent Myth" Malcolm Gladwell argues that this fixed "talent mind-set" of American management creates toxic work environments and the assembly of star talent rather than benefiting may have led to the collapse of Enron.
Changing our mindsets requires a collective shift in the way we discuss and appreciate our success and accomplishments. Connection and communication play pivotal roles in this shift, fostering a collaborative environment where the shared pursuit of growth and learning becomes a cornerstone of success.

"Action isn’t just the effect of motivation, but also the cause of it."
- Mark Manson, "How to Get Motivated: The 'Do Something Principle'"
According to Mark Manson we often procrastinate actions we need to do most in our lives or goals we want to achieve because those actions are often attached to negative emotions (6 Box Methodology - How do I show up under stress?)
Let's take even the most basic fear of failure -- common when starting a new project -- is enough to stall our progress.
So, Action - any action - offers some momentum that generates some motivation and inspiration that fuels more action.
Motivation is one of the driving forces behind human nature. I never thought of motivation being fueled by action - and any action.
But, it makes perfect sense, when you are not motivated - take any action - take a full conscious breath, make a doodle, take a walk, have a cup of tea, talk to a friend - take a nap, why not...and see what happens!

A raging river (or in this case a creek) - feels like a great metaphor for the end of one year and the start of another - however you define it. Best wishes for the New Year!
