Before James Conlon (@conlonconductor ) launched a life-long career as one of the most renowned American conductors, he was a student at the AMFS. After his student years, it didn't take long for Conlon to return as a fully-fledged conductor. Last year marked 50 years since his first appearance as a professional on an AMFS podium. Dive into his journey as a student and professional conductor at the AMFS; full video on YouTube at link in bio! Conlon returns to Aspen this summer, leading the Chamber Symphony in Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 and his own suite arrangement from Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk on July 13. -- 🎥: @jollymuleproductions

It was great sadness that I learned of Michael Tilson’s passing yesterday. His contribution to music, to education, and to the image of the American conductor is historic. We all looked on with admiration as Michael battled this unforgiving illness, conducting still contributing all the way. He was an greatly esteemed colleague, whom I first met over 55 years ago, and his loss will leave an empty hole in the classical music world, and beyond. But it will be filled with his memory in the minds and hearts of so many people whose lives he so deeply touched. - James Conlon

Last week at @uscthornton , Maestro @conlonconductor - Music Director of @laopera - led a special lecture on how Shakespeare’s influence led Giuseppe Verdi to compose ‘Falstaff,’ one of opera’s great comic masterpieces. Drawing on more than five decades on the podium, Maestro Conlon moved between commentary and listening, tracing how Shakespeare’s characters and language found new life in Verdi’s final opera. What a great opportunity for our students to hear directly from an artist who has spent a lifetime inside this repertoire.  Photos by @bri.fei
