Condor Cycles

About an hour south of Paris, is Montargis. Narrow streets trace the canals, cafés spill onto the pavements and, hidden among them, sits one of cycling’s oldest manufacturers. Hutchinson has been making bicycle tyres here since 1890. Its tyres rolled beneath some of the sport’s most recognisable riders, including Raymond Poulidor, Jacques Anquetil and earned gold in Olympic mountain biking. At the centre of the Hutchinson site stands a building designed by Gustave Eiffel, the engineer better known for the Eiffel Tower. Hutchinson still designs, tests & produces its tyres in France. Staff walk between Eiffel’s century-old building and the factory floor. Racing feedback turns into prototypes quickly, without crossing continents first. “It’s essentially a mottled or broken gilding effect. The gold isn’t applied as a flat layer—it’s painted, brushed back, and softened with tinted varnishes, creating movement rather than a uniform metallic finish.” The frame has two elements to the design. The hand paint burnt ochre and the gilded elements. Drawing directly from their heritage and applying traditional gilding methods in a new context. Porta Romana’s team used a layered gilding process that prioritises variation over uniformity. “It starts with a deep grey, before brown and ochre tones are built up… with speckling in plaster white, verdigris and yellow to create depth. Blue tones recede whilst lighter shades lift.” The underlying tones play a crucial role in how Porta Romania’s burnt ochre the finish is perceived. For over three decades, Porta Romana’s painting studio has been central to its design process. It is here that a distinctive library of hand-painted finishes has been developed. Condor x Porta Romana for Clerkenwheels “Working on a smooth surface required a much more deliberate approach… with ten layers of paints and varnishes, and an array of brushes, to recreate the same complexity.” The paint scheme applied to this frame draws on Porta Romana’s Burnt Ochre finish—originally developed for sculptural lighting pieces, where texture allows the surface to evolve and respond to light. Translating this finish onto the smooth aluminium of the Condor Italia RC required a fundamentally different approach. Porta Romana x Condor This one-off Condor Italia RC frameset has been transformed using hand-applied gilding and a rich burnt ochre finish, developed in Porta Romana’s painting studio. Where craft meets craft. We worked with PortaRomana to create a one-of-a-kind Italia RC, working with their painting studio and specialists in gilding to create a unique bicycle. Porta Romana are supporting Jonathan and Tom (aka @Clerkenwheels ). This May when they’ll be riding across the south of England on their way to @clerkenwelldesignweek . Their goal is to raise £10,000 for United in Design’s Education and Outreach Programme, helping to transform the lives of 1,000 young people across the UK by improving access to the design industry.
