This is not CGI. This is not science fiction. This is Kuwait in 1991. 📼 Lessons of Darkness As Iraqi forces retreated at the end of the Gulf War, they ignited more than 600 oil wells across the country, unleashing one of the worst environmental catastrophes in modern history. Smoke swallowed the sky for miles. The sun disappeared behind black clouds. Fires raged for months as the landscape transformed into something almost extraterrestrial. Drawn to the devastation, German filmmaker Werner Herzog traveled to Kuwait to document the aftermath. The result was Lessons of Darkness (1992), a film unlike any conventional war documentary. Herzog stripped away politics, borders, and historical context. Instead, he narrates the destruction as though observing a distant planet collapsing in another galaxy, accompanied by the music of Mahler and Verdi. When the film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, many viewers reacted with outrage, accusing Herzog of turning horror into spectacle. He defended his approach by invoking painters like Francisco Goya and Hieronymus Bosch, artists who portrayed violence and suffering through beauty centuries earlier. One of the film’s most haunting moments shows firefighters reigniting a well they had only just extinguished. Herzog offers no explanation, only a chilling question: had life without fire become unbearable for them? He later described Lessons of Darkness as a requiem for a planet no longer fit to inhabit. … #movie #Cinematic #WarHistory #documentary #environment
