It’s definitely harder to get out the door in winter, but it’s worth it.
Here’s why 👇
1. Snow or soft ground = easier on the legs
Fresh snow and soft winter ground absorb more than pavement, so impact is slightly lower taking some stress off joints.
2. Not sweating as much = fewer issues mid-run
You lose less fluid and salt in winter, so dehydration and cramping are way less common. It’s easier to get through longer runs without that drained, flat feeling.
3. Less heat stress, steadier heart rate
When it’s cold you don’t overheat as fast. Heart rate stays more stable and easy runs actually stay easy instead of slowly turning into hard work.
4. Easier to stay consistent
You recover better from most winter runs because heat isn’t draining you. That makes it easier to show up again the next day and stack solid weeks.
Bonus tip: You want to feel slightly cold when you leave. If you feel nice and warm, you’re probably overdressed. After 5 to 10 minutes you should feel comfortable, not hot.
