The book „Coney Island, 1984“ presents a selected contact sheet by photographer Daniel Mayer (@danielmayer_photography ) by zooming in and out, to create a cinematic sequence. This allows the viewer to be very close to the artist’s experience because the contact print is a straightforward and intimate way of participating in the photographer’s observations.
Zooming in on individual motifs opens up a further level of perception and meaning to the archive material. This creates a visual dialog between the photographer and the editor. In this case, between father and son.
The cover design is based on the photographer’s associative memories of this one day, which precede the book like film opening credits

A herbarium is a collection of preserved plants or parts of plants for scientific purposes.
It is therefore a medium for cataloging nature and preserving its research.
In Lion Mayer’s (@dunkelburry ) “Herbarium” series, the artist shows the research material he has collected, which was essential for creating his work. The artist preserves and catalogs his inspirations in his virtual herbaria and thus makes his process transparent.
Working with collected source material and referring to what already exists underlines his understanding of the creative process as a transformative practice.
