Victoria is setting a strong example for Australia’s transition to a circular future, and its statewide FOGO rollout is leading the way.
With mandated universal FOGO access by 2030, and councils complementing with their own programs, Victoria is showing how policy, education and infrastructure can work together to turn food and garden waste into a valuable resource. The Victorian Government's policy also sets ambitious targets, aiming for 80% waste diversion rate by 2030, and halving the amount of organic material sent to landfill.

What actually goes in your home compost bin? It’s not just food scraps and garden waste. You can also compost shredded paper, certified home compostable cups and cutlery, and even fireplace ash. But there’s a right and wrong way to do it.
Knowing what stays out is just as crucial: plastic-lined paper, dairy, meat, and pet waste can all disrupt the composting process or introduce harmful pathogens. Getting it right helps reduce landfill emissions and supports Australia’s growing circular economy.
Certified home compostable packaging breaks down in the right environment - just look for the proper certification!

Queensland has invested $151 million to help councils roll out FOGO in a bid to achieve 80% diversion of organic waste by 2030. While the FOGO rollout in Queensland has faced significant delays, the state is quietly making strides in composting and organic recovery.
Councils and the state government have initiated programs, including rolling out new green-lid bin collections and piloting food organics and garden organics services. So far, results show solid progress with over 464,000 additional green-lid bins, projected to divert an estimated 100,000 tonnes of organic waste annually.

Compostable packaging achieves much more than just reducing plastic! It helps divert food waste from landfill, cuts greenhouse gas emissions and supports healthy soils. Made from renewable, plant-based materials, it’s a smarter solution for people and the planet.
It goes beyond the linear model of consumption for traditional packaging materials (take, make and waste cycle), supporting the broader shift towards a circular economy.

Think compostable packaging can’t break down or harms compost? A study commissioned by the Australasian Bioplastics Association’s (ABA) reveals that certified compostable materials that meet Australian standards pose little to no risk to composting facilities, and actually help improve food organics recovery when done right.
Concerns around microplastics, chemical contamination, and ecotoxicity are not supported by rigorous scientific data for products that are certified to AS4736 or AS5810 and managed properly.

Australia is poised for a major policy shift in packaging. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has proposed a regulatory reform to address how packaging is designed, produced and disposed of, with the ultimate goal of cutting waste and protecting the environment.
At the heart of the proposal is the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Scheme, a proven model that holds businesses accountable for the entire lifecycle of their packaging. At Compost Connect, we support the EPR approach for its ability to drive real change. It’s enforceable, effective and aligns with a vision for a circular economy where waste becomes a resource.
