Looking back to late September last year, we held some very important recording sessions in Singapore with the wonderfully talented violinist @joyy.alegria (Joyy Yong) (lead violin role of the Violinist). My heartfelt thanks to music producer @pantzuchi (Tzu Ch)i for the patience and support. Sound engineer Leonard Fong. I’m truly grateful for this team.

Sharing The Violinist — Orchestra Recording Session 🎻
We’ve reached the final lap of this incredible journey. Working on an animated feature is truly a challenge—the workflow is so different from scoring a live-action film, and the demands are far greater. It requires immense preparation, research, and patience.
I’ve been working on The Violinist since around June last year. Many pieces were written along the way—some found their place in the film, others didn’t—but all of them were part of the process.
Today is the day every film composer longs for: the final play-down. This is what we live for—to hear our music come alive, performed by an extraordinary orchestra

🎬 Scoring 4 Films in 4 Different Genres — It’s All About Solving Problems 🎬
I had worked on three plus one current film scoring projects—each from a different genre. That means switching gears constantly: emotionally, musically, and mentally. It’s not just about writing music. It’s about understanding the story, doing the research, and applying years of working experience to make the music feel right for each world. Every genre demands a different approach, language, and attitude. And above all, knowing the style of music—its history, its sound, its soul—is essential.
Film scoring is really about solving problems:
🎥 What does the director need?
🎭 What emotion should the audience feel?
🧩 What’s missing from the scene that music can complete?
Technology may help with production, but it can’t do this thinking for you. AI won’t tell you what the director truly wants. It won’t feel the tension in a scene, or know when silence is more powerful than sound.
This is where knowledge, instinct, and sensitivity come in. The more we understand the craft and the music itself, the more we can bring a film to life.
This is called the DynoMy piano, built by chuck Monte using mainly parts from the Fender Rhodes. The main features of this are the Tri-chorus and the punchy bell-like tone added to the Rhodes sound. I bought this in 1984 from LA. The only one in Singapore and there are not many in Asia.
