What are Complex Disorders? Millions of people live with conditions that don’t fit neatly into one diagnosis. Complex disorders often involve multiple body systems, overlapping conditions, and fragmented care pathways. Despite affecting millions, research and data remain siloed which slows progress and limits solutions. At CODA, we’re working to change that by advancing neuroimmune research, connecting critical data, and accelerating discovery so patients aren’t left navigating fragmented care alone. Make your resolution to fund research for patients living with complex disorders by supporting CODA today: /complexdisordersalliance

Patients with complex multisystem disorders carry multiple diagnoses at once. Symptoms crossing specialties. Treatment options that stop short of seeing the whole picture. CODA changes the rules by fueling research that yields faster results and cuts across diagnoses to uncover what is actually driving disease, so discoveries can reach the clinic sooner and create real options for patients. Help move this research forward. Donate today. /complexdisordersalliance

Why does microvascular research matter for patients living with complex chronic disorders? New research led by Professor Resia Pretorius at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with Dr. Michal “Mikki” Tal at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is advancing the study of microvascular function in conditions such as ME/CFS and Long COVID. This work expands the ability to observe and analyze microvascular systems and can strengthen the understanding of how these processes contribute to disease at a systems level. These insights are helping inform the development of more precise diagnostic frameworks and targeted therapeutic approaches for patients. CODA is committed to supporting research that unites best-in-class science and accelerates progress toward improved patient outcomes. CODA is proud to support an international collaboration advancing microvascular research in complex chronic disorders. This work brings together the expertise of Professor Resia Pretorius of Stellenbosch University and Dr. Michal “Mikki” Tal of Massachusetts Institute of Technology to investigate how microvascular dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction and immune-mediated clotting may drive persistent symptoms in conditions such as Long COVID, ME/CFS, and other complex, chronic disorders. By advancing the ability to observe blood flow in real time, this research represents a meaningful step toward more precise diagnostics and targeted treatments. This collaboration reflects CODA’s commitment to supporting and uniting best-in-class science and accelerating research that translates into promising treatments. May 12 marks International ME/CFS Day, a moment to recognize both the global impact of ME/CFS and Long Covid and the scientific progress underway to better understand these conditions. CODA is proud to support Sequence ME & Long Covid, a global collaboration building on @decodemestudy to identify the genetic architecture of these diseases. Today, we are announcing Phase 2 funding, supporting the sequencing of 6,000 ME/CFS samples using advanced long-read technology. This represents an important step forward in uncovering the genetic drivers of these conditions. In partnership with @actionform.e , the @edinburghuniversity , @oxfordnanopore , and the European Bioinformatics Institute, this study applies whole-genome sequencing to detect rare variants and structural differences across the genome. With 6,000 samples already being sequenced and plans to expand to tens of thousands, this represents one of the largest studies of its kind and a meaningful step toward targeted diagnostics and treatments. This is what it looks like to build the future of complex disease research. 🔗.uk/major-funding-secured-for-sequence-me-long-covid-a-decodeme-project/ Support the work driving this field forward: plexdisorders.org

Kaley is a complex disorder patient navigating a reality where time is often spent in medical settings instead of classrooms, friendships, and the everyday moments that shape a young life. Her experience reflects what so many patients face and why research must move forward with urgency. At CODA, we focus on supporting science that moves treatments forward. Every breakthrough brings us closer to a future where patients like Kaley can reclaim their time, their independence, and the life they deserve. Support research for patients who can’t wait. May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) Awareness Month. At the Complex Disorders Alliance, we study EDS and HSD as part of a multisystem biological framework in which connective tissue, neural signaling, and immune activation are tightly linked, offering insight into the overlapping patterns observed in conditions such as Long COVID, ME/CFS, and dysautonomia. These conditions reflect connected biology across the body. Coordinated, cross-disciplinary research creates a path toward deeper understanding, clearer pathways, and more precise treatment development. This month, we honor those living with EDS and HSD and highlight the urgent need for research that can change outcomes. Shan is living with ME/CFS, POTS, and MCAS, and is using her voice to highlight the lived reality of complex, multisystem conditions. Patient voices like Shan’s are critical to advancing research. They help shape the questions we ask, the systems we study, and the speed at which progress happens. At CODA, we are focused on accelerating research into the shared biological mechanisms underlying these conditions to drive meaningful discovery and create a clearer path toward diagnostics and treatments. Shan’s willingness to speak out is a powerful contribution to this movement and a reminder of what is possible when patients are placed at the center of research. Women are diagnosed with IBS at higher rates than men. This insight carries a clear signal. IBS is a complex condition that often overlaps with other chronic disorders, pointing to interconnected biological pathways. At CODA, we are focused on uncovering the shared pathways driving these conditions so patients can move closer to answers. Support research for patients who can’t wait. What if we could more deeply understand and measure what is happening inside the body and finally connect the dots? That is one of the roles of biomarkers. Biomarkers can help researchers identify patterns, define patient subgroups, and move closer to targeted treatments instead of trial and error. For patients living with complex conditions, this is how research starts and can drive real answers. At CODA, we are focused on uncovering the biology behind these conditions so we can accelerate progress where it is needed most - bringing effective treatments to patients. This is what accelerating research actually looks like. From early discovery to real treatments, the path can be complex and feel too slow for patients living with conditions like Long COVID, ME/CFS, EDS, POTS/dysautonomia, and more. At CODA, we are working to change that. By studying the shared biology across complex disorders, we can move faster toward answers and toward treatments that reflect how these conditions actually present in patients. Because CODA knows patients can’t wait. Join our community. Support the science.
