REDUCING COMMON RF THREATS Phew, it’s been awhile since our last post. A lot has happened between the last one and this post. Life has become quite busy. For those asking, yes there will be more posts and videos. Anyways, this post just barely dips the feet into the ocean of electronic warfare. We cover generally speaking the most common RF threats (scanning and direction finding) you may face while operating radios and electronics of any kind. It is extremely important to understand that the more reliant you are on electronics, the more control the enemy has over you. The electronics around you, every one of them COULD and may be used against you. Even now. It doesn’t have to be wartime. Radios and electronics are cool. But knowing their limitations is critically important when conducting operations. Especially with advanced adversaries that have poured billions into R&D to exploit the technologies you use every day. This post DOES NOT cover all of the electronic warfare threats out there. By no means is this a complete guide. This post should be a “starter” to get you on the right track to learn more. DIGITAL LAND MOBILE RADIO Starting to develop your radio communications network? Consider digital Land Mobile Radio. Imagine a radio built to take a beating, performs well, is secure, and is able to be sustained in the field for weeks. LMR can achieve this. In this post, we gloss over the best radio vendors and some of the radio models they produce. By far, the most common digital modes that are available to us dirty civilians are P25, DMR, and NXDN. Each of these can support strong cryptography however the way it’s implemented is different for each standard. This is tricky stuff. But someone in your team has to know it. GETTING STARTED WITH ASTRO 25 ASTRO 25 radios are a fantastic way to get in on the security that P25 can offer. With hardware encryption and AES-256, you can greater protect your communications integrity, all whilst without being reliant on grid-based technologies. This post is to help you get started with ASTRO 25. It’s an old product line with lots of little “gotcha!” moments. We hope that this post helps alleviate some of those mistakes before you fork up the serious investment. We took our time with this post. And we hope you all learn from it. Of course we didn’t cover everything, well because it’s really hard to fit all that in under ten slides. So anyways, I digress. Make sure your communications network can stand the test of time by ensuring that you are using some of the best hardware around. Note that ASTRO 25 is not your only option. RADIO SECURITY TAKE TWO. This one shouldn’t have as many errors as the first time I posted it lol. Damnit and I got the order fucked up. CORRECTION: KFDTool software only works on Windows. Not GNU/Linux. Radio security is an extremely important element to any radio communications operations. If you do not have good security over the radio waves, consider your operations already compromised. When facing advanced adversaries, it’s very important to understand their abilities and how we can try to mitigate them as much as possible. Don’t get caught up with how encryption is all that. It is very important, but it’s only half of the puzzle. What good is encryption when your ops can be hunted by directional analysis (direction finding, DF, @terminal_armament )? I hope this post sparks some thought about this topic and why you may want to choose P25 hardware over other, possibly inferior tech. Anyways, I grandly apologize about the lack of posts. GETTING STARTED WITH MOTOROLA MOTOTRBO RADIOS Motorola MOTOTRBO (DMR) radios are often criticized for being expensive and super difficult to work on. And in the past, this is definitely true. However, I plan on making it easier for people to operate them, especially when it comes to guides and videos. Motorola radios really are the industry standard. There is a reason why they are used in many places. Because they work. Now it may not be easy to make them work, but once you do get them working, they work VERY well. In this post I don’t really talk about the scummy attitude Motorola has against private citizens. Well, they don’t like us for some reason. But whatever. We don’t buy their radios for the company, we buy the radios because they perform well. Motorola radios are literally the step down from high class military radios. Albeit Motorola radios are more restrictive when it comes to features. We will have a guide on this soon. Enjoy this overview of Motorola’s MOTOTRBO line of radios. Why MOTOTRBO over other DMR radios? Well because Motorola Solutions isn’t Chinese. And their software is actually pretty good (with the exception of CPS 2.0).
