Such a delight for an art historian to track back the complete provenance of an early bronze thanks to the still existing labels inside the bronze to early pictures in his studio and its story in a French noble family till today. This impressive bronze of the « Call to Arms” or “La Défense” was gifted by Rodin to a charity in 1906 as a tribute to the famous Paris Belle-époque socialite Countess Greffulhe, model for #marcelproust in “Search of Lost time”.———————————————————————————Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)

I learnt today with great sadness the passing of Dr Alain Beausire, one of the most knowledgeable scholars on Auguste Rodin, a friend and mentor whose lessons and guidance during my time at the Rodin museum marked deeply my early career. Alain Beausire was the author of numerous reputed books on the artist published during his tenure as Head of the Archives at the Rodin museum. His kindness and deep knowledge will be missed.

This outstanding association of bronze and marble was photographed several times by the avantguard photographers Stephen Haweis & Henry Coles in Rodin’s studio in 1903 and then was lost for a century until it came out literally out of a gerbil cage. #architecture I long thought that Rodin’s architectural work stopped in the late 1880s until I recently discovered this beautiful 1914 picture of the “Despair” being installed on the front facade of the Hotel Particulier of Edouard Autant and Louise Lara (the famous actress from the #comediefrancaise) in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. The work has been removed after 1938 when the building was sold by the Autant-Lara, went at auction at the #hoteldrouot. And was sold to the famous Rodin collector B.Gerald Cantor. It is now in the collections of the #cantorcenterforvisualarts, Stanford university Art museum. ——————————————————————————-—-
