TODAY'S FEATURED COMIC ART CEREBUS THE AARDVARK ILLUSTRATION ARTISTS: DAVE SIM CAF GALLERY: TOM COKER Join us in wishing a happy 70th birthday to Dave Sim, creator of Cerebus. His 300-issue epic storyline was a milestone in indie comics history, produced on his own until background artist and cover colorist Gerhard joined him at the 65th issue mark. The title started as a sword and sorcery send up, as seen in this featured illustration, but evolved into a much larger treatise on modern society as seen through the vehicle of a talking aardvark. Originally, Sim created the character for a fanzine. "I drew a cartoon aardvark with a sword as a mascot. At that point someone realized that the name of the magazine was misspelled," Sim said in an interview. "What [publisher Deni Loubert] had intended to call the magazine was Cerberus, the name of the three-headed dog in Greek mythology who guarded Hades. So, I suggested that we just say that Cerebus was the name of the cartoon mascot." After the printer failed to produce the fanzine, Sim decided to use Cerebus for his own comic. TODAY'S FEATURED COMIC ART INDIANA JONES AND THE JUNGLE QUEEN PROMO ART ARTISTS: ADAM HUGHES @atomhues CAF GALLERY: ROYD BURGOYNE @roydster58 Six weeks ago, superstar artist Adam Hughes announced through his website that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. Last Thursday, he and his wife Allison Sohn made a special appearance on the CAF+ channel to give the community an exclusive update. They revealed that the oncologists at Emory University hospital were able to remove the tumor in his colon and he would be fitted for a port to begin chemotherapy with the goal of destroying any remaining cancer cells in his system. Overall, they sounded optimistic and prepared for the battle ahead and thanked all their fans for the well-wishes. In a lighter note, Jimmy Palmiotti submitted a question asking Hughes why he likes Indiana Jones so much. "It's my favorite genre," Hughes explained saying that after a lifetime of drawing superheroes, he would like a change. "If and when I ever get around to being able to do my own creator owned stuff, it won't be a superhero comic. It'll be an action-adventure. treasure hunter type thing." Since Hughes will not be working for the next several months at least, Sohn announced that some select, previously unseen pieces have been tucked away in case of an emergency like this.
