Cover crops, community, and growing toward a more sustainable future 🌱✨ Yesterday with @freshertogether , we welcomed community members, growers, and partners to @comercrops farm for a Cover Crops & Climate workshop for an afternoon centered around learning, collaboration, and hands-on experiences in the field ☀️ From farm tours and demo plantings to seed giveaways and conversations around conservation funding, it was inspiring to see so many people come together to share knowledge and explore practices that support healthier soil and stronger food systems. Shoutout to @auachicago for distributing soil health toolkits 💚 ➡️ We at the Gary Comer Youth Center are happy to help The Staple Crop Growers Network, a project of @michael_fields_ag , in partnership with @freshertogether , @fondymarkets and @miffs_michigan . This collaboration is supported by funding from the @usdagov National Institute of Food and Agriculture. P.S. We all enjoyed pizza together afterwards where our GCYC urban agriculture team actually built the pizza oven and the chicken coop. Cover Crops and Climate! Join us for a hands-on workshop at the @comercrops farm on all things Cover Crops. We’ll follow up in person after the virtual Cover Crops: Why and How? event on May 13th with an afternoon of presentations, farm tours, demo plantings, seed giveaways and more! We’ll be joined by staff from the USDA to share resources on conservation funding that can cover crops on your farm. @auachicago will be distributing a soil health toolkit, that includes a cover crop zine, a thermal composting zine and a nutrient management guide. This event is part of a collaboration called Deepening Relationships to Staple Crops with Fresher Together, and support of @michael_fields_ag , @fondymarkets , and MIFFS. Feeling so, so grateful to have been able to attend a beautiful Harvest Dinner @garycomeryouthcenter 🍁 🍹 The event opened with cocktails and small bites, accompanied by a rooftop garden + hydroponic lab tour 🌱 Dinner was served on the @comercrops farm at the site of their newly built Food Sovereignty Hub 🌾 The menu featured food grown on their youth-led urban farm by their Urban Agriculture apprentices and prepared by their Culinary Arts apprentices under the mentorship of Chicago chefs from @maxwellstrading @cmbcater @eatherbachi smokysoulbbqchicago @luellassouthernkitchen @mabessandwichshop @bangbangpie @fafo_chicago I am always continually amazed by the way food unites us, especially when it’s for a purpose bigger than ourselves - all in support of empowering Southside youth 💛 Thank you @garycomeryouthcenter for bringing everyone together for something so special ✨ P.S.
