Ever wonder what exactly do college mascots do all summer? The answer is A LOT. Ohio State’s Brutus Buckeye team has about three months between spring and fall semester to prepare for the next school year. They have to get their rookies up to speed, get in shape, get in costume for events from birthday parties to corporate outings, and, most importantly, attend mascot summer camp.
During my year with Brutus, I went to Wisconsin Dells for mascot camp. College mascots from across the country attend camp each summer as part of their preparations. It’s a chance for teams to get one-on-one time with the staff instructors who will oversee and judge their national championship performances later in the season. But it’s also a chance to have some fun with their fellow mascots — in and out of costume.
You can read all about Brutus’ time at mascot camp at the link in my bio and at dispatch.com/brutus.
Brutus goes through his own training camp in the summer to prepare for the grueling year ahead.

"When I am walking to the office, when I am 'playing' in my garden, when I am shopping at Giant Eagle ... I spend a lot of time thinking about the First Amendment, particularly my favorite parts: the freedoms of speech and the press," writes opinion and community engagement editor Amelia Robinson.
"The concept that those rights belong not only to you and those you agree with is too often lost on the collective us, to the detriment of our form of democracy."
