@jackycolorsanyway Swan Castle from #MagicalWorlds by @johannabasford I’d had my eye on this page forever, but honestly? The massive castle scared me 🫣 Architecture and I… we’re just different worlds. I never really know how to pick my colors, should I make everything the same or use different shades for each building so it doesn’t end up looking like a solid block? But hey, I think this castle turned out okay ☺️ From the start, I wanted the colors to match the opposite page, which was tricky. I’d stopped writing down my combos at some point and when I finally figured them out, I realized it really makes a difference whether you’re coloring a flower or a roof 😅 Then there was this huge swan I’d completely ignored because of my castle panic 🤣 I wanted it to match too, but my colors just refused to play nicely together. Luckily, my past self had carefully written down all my combos and the swans from my Swan Lady page from last year were perfect, so I was saved… for a hot second. Then I remembered: which pencils had I vowed never to use in this book again? Polychromos. And… which ones had I used back then? Yep... 😅 Two layers and that’s it for this paper. Some color combos didn’t behave like I’m used to and the Polys left those tiny spots I usually only see with wax-based pencils. No eraser can fix them. But I powered through and made the best of it. @lauracolorstoo Found an old copy of Enchanted Forest that fell apart (don't worry, I have a few copies of it!)... so I thought it's about time I did another page. I prefer working flat vs. in a book, so it was irresistible to me 😅 I love owls and, of course, blue... so here we are. I've had questions about if I'm going to pick up some YouTube tutorials again, but I'm not sure. I have a shared studio space, but it's not quiet like my old studio was. I'm working on ideas, though, including setting up in my bedroom 😅 I've struggled with coloring and art in general since my sweet Abby passed away, as she was always my constant companion while I was creating. Her death left a deep emptiness that still hurts. She was 21 years old, and had a peaceful last day. Her little box sits with me now as I paint, and I think of her constantly. @jackycolorsanyway "Bright Summer Nights" from #Seasons by @hannakarlzon I couldn’t really decide between a few pages, so I showed my partner the ones I already had ideas for (yes, there was even a Rita page this time) and of course he picked a Hanna page and it turned out to be the largest one 😅 At first I didn’t actually mind, because I’d been eyeing this page for a while anyway, the bleeding hearts remind me of my grandpa’s beautiful garden when I was little 🥰 I was still super happy with the background, but once I started coloring… the motivation was gone. I honestly don’t enjoy the Dutch paper anymore. In the beginning I thought it was great because I have to use water as a base here (otherwise the paper is just too smooth) and that made the whole process faster. But I just can’t layer my pencils on it properly like I’ve been doing lately and that really annoyed me. On top of that, the whole page turned out way too bright, definitely not what I had in mind 😅 But I guess it matches the title "Bright Summer Nights" ✨ I know, I know, I’m complaining on a high level here, but I just wasn’t (and still am not) completely happy with how it turned out. I felt really limited and I know it would have looked much better on a different type of paper (at least in my eyes).
