If we look carefully, we notice that we are in constant exchange with the world at the
smallest scale. Particles move between us and everything else—quietly,
endlessly—binding us to place, to object, to each other. This understanding shapes how
I see matter: not as inert, but as dynamic and evolving. Everything carries memory.
Everything radiates presence. Objects, like bodies, absorb time. They hold traces of
what they’ve witnessed. They remember.
When I interact with matter and then you interact with that same matter, do we then interact with each other? I think we do and it’s the grand connector and the energy we feel pulsing through us.

Resin and Foam | 19” x 12”
The more I learn about matter, on a particle level, the more I am convinced that everything around us, animate or not, has consciousness. Some of the matter is dense and appears lifeless and some is loose and appears to be alive. But- it’s all the same. This realization has helped me to make sense of the deep emotions I feel for discarded and disintegrating materials. They are ALIVE. They have consciousness that can be seen and felt if we pay attention.
I found this piece of foam in September of 2021and have been carting it around ever since. I knew immediately there was something beautifully alive about it the second I saw it on the ground. Now, all these years later, it has found its way into a sculpture that for me, captures it’s voice.

I have never loved anything final, fixed or set in stone. It makes me nervous to think that possibility is gone. For instance, the idea of anything archival- eek. The things I make have always been a way for me to live in this limbo state. Work that never stops changing. And now, as I settle into mid-life and watch so many of the things I love and cherish change I have this unavoidable need to HOLD THE F(*(%CK ON as tight as I can. I guess this could be considered a step down on the emotional/spiritual growth ladder?
