Talaricheruvu Rural School by CollectiveProject
Set in rural Andhra Pradesh—a hot, arid region of Southern India—the project reimagines a fifteen-year-old “L”-shaped school building into a vibrant and empowering learning environment for the children of cement factory workers. Though structurally sound, the building sat neglected at the far corner of a barren two-acre site, offering little shade apart from a handful of trees along the boundary where students crowded to escape the harsh afternoon sun.
Inside, the conditions were equally challenging. The spaces, poorly lit and inadequately ventilated, were carved into sixteen oversized classrooms, a shared library–cum–faculty room, and two science labs. Essential facilities such as bathrooms were located at a considerable distance, accessible only by a winding path that posed difficulties for the children.
