In 1962, Patek Philippe introduced the first serially produced automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch ever made by any brand. The ref. 3448, nicknamed the Padellone for its bold 37.5mm proportions, was manufactured until 1981 in approximately 586 examples.
This 1979 example is the coveted "/1J" bracelet configuration, produced in comparatively small numbers and often as special client requests, preserved full set with its original box and Certificate of Origin. One of the most iconic perpetual calendar wristwatches of the 20th century, and this example has everything.

Part 2 of Tania's series on shaped watches is here - and this one covers what many collectors consider the true golden age of Patek Philippe design.
From the lug as sculpture in the 1940s, to the bold rectangular designs of the 1950s with nicknames like "Marilyn Monroe," "Eiffel Tower," and "Top Hat," to the wildly asymmetric creations of Gilbert Albert in the 1960s - this was a period when Patek Philippe pursued every available dimension of form simultaneously, without ever abandoning its classical heritage. And at the end of the decade, a geometric insight based on the golden ratio gave us the Golden Ellipse.

This fresh-to-market 1910 Patek Philippe pocket watch is monogrammed BS on the back though it could easily be SB. Either way, it is a stunning example of early 20th century Patek Philippe craftsmanship.
The bezel, winding base, and case back are elegantly enameled in a Greek Key pattern in white enamel, while the white enamel dial features blue enamel numerals that seem to jump off the surface, complemented by hand-cut gold hands finished in the Breguet style. The cuvette carries a mysterious, engraved symbol we have not been able to identify - which only adds to the charm. A beautiful and affordable Patek Philippe work of art that may still hold a few more secrets.

The ref. 3940 is one of the most important perpetual calendars of the modern era - and this circa 1990 yellow gold example offers something you rarely see on the reference: a factory-added 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe bracelet that gives it a completely different personality from the more commonly seen strap examples. The bracelet adds presence and period charm while preserving the refined 36mm proportions and the beautifully balanced perpetual calendar dial that made the ref. 3940 so defining of the Philippe Stern era.

Nothing exemplifies the beauty of Patek Philippe from this era more than a blued gold dial cased in white gold with a white gold bracelet. The ref. 3738/117G is rooted in the principles of the Golden Section - the proportion of approximately 1 to 1.6181 that has long been regarded as a symbol of harmony found throughout art, architecture, and nature.
Introduced in 1978 and produced across four decades in a variety of dial and bracelet configurations, the ref. 3738 became one of the longest-running and most iconic references in Patek Philippe's history. This rare example pairs the highly desirable blued gold dial with a factory Patek Philippe heavy bracelet made by Jean-Pierre Ecoffey, sized for a 7 inch wrist. Made and sold in 1993.

The Nautilus did not become an icon because of scarcity or hype. It became one because of what it is. As Edouard Henn writes in his latest article, when sunlight catches the dial and plays across the satin-finished and polished surfaces of the case and bracelet, you understand why. Originally published in Revolution magazine, this is a comprehensive, data-driven look at the Nautilus story - covering collectability, auction results, production numbers, and the full timeline from the ref. 3700 to the ref. 5811. Essential reading for anyone serious about the Nautilus this anniversary year.

This is the watch of the year for Patek Philippe perpetual calendar collectors. Only 6 first series ref. 3940G examples were made in white gold and only 2 are known - making this considerably rarer than the Beyer edition that recently topped $1M USD at auction.
Made in 1987 and first sold on December 11 of that year by retailer Kaufmann in Canada, this first-series example features the coveted early dial configuration with sunken subsidiary dials and a French calendar - one of the rarest dial variants known on the reference. Full set and in superlative condition, as the market continues to wake up to the rarest ref. 3940 examples, this one is ready for its next owner.

Rarely do we see such a fine, fresh-to-market example of the ref. 2597J, and this one has been with the family of its original owner since it was sold in 1961.
Patek Philippe's first Travel Time wristwatch, the ref. 2597 HS was marketed in the United States as the "Cross Country" and featured Louis Cottier's legendary Travel Time movement. Between 1958 and 1962, Cottier is believed to have received approximately 75 movements to modify with his ingenious Travel Time setting mechanism, and to date only 48 examples in yellow gold and six in pink gold have been identified.

The ref. 2509 is often overshadowed by its sibling the ref. 2508 - but as Paul Engel argues in his latest in-depth article for Collectability, it deserves proper respect on its own merits. Produced from 1950 to 1968 in yellow gold, rose gold, and steel, the ref. 2509 offers three distinct dial configurations, three different movement calibers, and a flatter, more elegantly dressed profile that sets it apart from the ref. 2508 in ways that matter on the wrist.
With approximately 10% or less of original production known back in the market, finding a top-quality example is becoming increasingly difficult - and the auction results Paul has curated make a compelling case for why that matters.
