Seeing my name live on the same cover as the one and only bell hooks is one of the more mystifying honors of my life. Grateful to have been invited to write the introduction to this new edition of her poetry collection, When Angels Speak of Love.
At some point we are going to have to ask ourselves why we so readily devour Black thinkers on topics of justice and oppression, but so seldom sit at their feet on matters of love and tenderness. These are love poems, unapologetic in their theater and vulnerabilities. And those who encounter them, not for what they might teach you but how they might move you, are better for it. hooks has left us with so much.
Available now.
**UPDATE-CANCELED APPEARANCE
Unfortunately, I am no longer able to attend this retreat as someone in my household has tested positive for COVID. While I, thankfully, am still testing negative, I have decided to cancel my trip to CA out of reasonable caution. I am so sorry for the inconvenience and am sad to miss out on sharing space together 🖤

Join me in-person in LA or online for A Writing Room’s annual writers retreat. Marlon James, Anne Lamott, and a number of other writers will be leading workshops on “craft, habit, and completion.” I’ll be offering a workshop for contemplative storytelling.
If you read the acknowledgements in Black Liturgies, you know that I no longer believe writing is a purely solitary endeavor. Sometimes words become more honest in the right company. Maybe this will be that for you. Come write with me!

“As a part of PROTECTING our own HUMANITY, we have to convince ourselves that there are so many small things that are WORTH our AMAZEMENT.” ✨
This week, Cole Arthur Riley reminds us that optimism DOESN’T always arrive in grand gestures — sometimes it shows up in the tiniest, EVERYDAY wonders. 💫
What’s something SMALL that filled you with WONDER lately? 🌈👇🏽

We are ready and excited to be present for this powerful virtual book discussion for Tricia Hersey’s (@thenapministry ) latest work, We Will Rest! The Art of Escape.
Our dynamic conversation partner is none other than @colearthurriley (@blackliturgies ). We hosted this dynamic duo last year for Cole’s book, and they’re back to discuss Tricia’s book. So many nuggets and necessary reminders were shared to help shift how we show up for ourselves in this world and we’re excited again, so yes, pull up…online.
From We Will Rest: “We don’t believe we are worthy of rest unless we burn ourselves out to accomplish it. Our thinking has been limited by disconnection, sleep deprivation, and the unattainable call for perfection. The systems will NEVER give us rest. It is something we must create for ourselves and each other.”
