Nominee Sara De Brito Faustino presents the work A Home With No Roof.
A Home With No Roof is about the home where Sara De Brito Faustino grew up, a place where strangeness coexisted with the familiarity of the ordinary. As an intimate space, it should have been nurturing and reassuring, and yet it was also the setting of painful experiences.
The project expresses the identity of a young girl under construction, growing up with imbalance and wounds. In this work, the designer uses 1:12 scale models of her home to explore its dysfunctionality safely.
By immersing herself in this constructed world and incorporating scaled-down everyday objects, sculptures of body parts, and juxtapositions of size, she transforms her apartment into a monstrous entity while positioning herself as both subject and object within the space. Her home becomes a body, and her body becomes a home. Learning to live in it is part of the process, as the series has enabled her to regain control, distance herself from the past, and release new strengths. This is why the images always balance on a thin line between seductive aesthetics and disquieting details.

A home with no roof
by Sara De Brito Faustino
@colddaily
Sara De Brito Faustino graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in photography from ECAL. She lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Over the course of eleven years of practicing the medium of photography, she has developed her own artistic identity. At the core of her practice, she explores the materiality of objects and the body, highlighting textures, colors, folds, wrinkles, fissures, strengths and weaknesses. Her artistic approach, infused with emotions, is focused on the intimate; self-portraiture and intimate space; home. Beyond technique, she uses photography to transcend emotions and a tumultuous personal history. Everyday subjects and objects, mundane elements, are her preferred subjects. Sara assembles them in a way that they don’t translate a vision of the ordinary but of the extraordinary. She transforms her daily life into a theatrical stage on which she play/reenacts her own story.
This project is about the home where I grew up, a place where strangeness and the familiarity of the ordinary existed alongside. Being an intimate space, it should have been nurturing and reassuring. And yet, it was the scene of painful scenes. Today, I see this space as threatening. Uncomfortable, dysfunctional, my home is the witness to scars from the past.

Judge @bloodypixy comments on the choice: “Sara Faustino’s project A Home With No Roof brilliantly uses a 1:15 scale model of a house to explore the dysfunctionality within her home. By immersing herself in this miniature world—incorporating scaled-down everyday objects, sculptures of body parts, and striking juxtapositions of size—she transforms the apartment into a monstrous entity while positioning herself as both subject and object within the space. Her imagery vividly conveys a sense of discomfort and awkwardness, evoking the emotional experiences of her younger self. Through this process, Sara not only invites the audience to empathize with her journey but also uses art as a medium to reflect on and reconcile with her past.”
