This is gonna ruffle some feathers. …Especially as an Asian daughter - the expectation is that you honor your parents & elders by respecting them & their wishes and pay them back for what they sacrificed to raise and care for you. To say you don’t owe your parents is seen as incredibly disrespectful. And… it’s the perfect way to continue cycles of abuse and manipulation. If you were to describe the same exact treatment, but say it was from a boyfriend/girlfriend, teacher, coach, boss or friend - everyone would tell you to leave that relationship expeditiously. It’s only with the title of mother/father that people expect you to deal with it. The bad parts of your parent are not a mask they wear sometimes and when they take it off your “real” parent, the loving, nurturing, safe one, is underneath. Both parts are your parent. And presuming you’ve done everything you can to work through and heal the bond, it becomes on you to deal with the consequences of staying in the relationship or dealing with the grief of having to leave. You will make the best choice for you, however difficult it may be. I hope you find peace and community in it regardless. 🤍
