This past April, CMU students presented on a fascinating range of topics at the Student Science Symposium. At this come-and-go event that celebrated undergraduate research, students presented on a wide range of scientific topics such as healthcare accessibility in Edmonton, invertebrate sampling in Zimbabwe vs. Canada, zebra mussel control in Lake Winnipeg, and more. The symposium demonstrated how CMU fosters academic curiosity in students and equips them to pursue various kinds of research. At CMU, May is Research Month, where stories from students and faculty who have done incredible research through CMU will be highlighted. Did you know that CMU students can go on weeks long research trips during the school year? That's what recent CMU graduate Asher Warkentin did when he was given the opportunity to study microscopic cold-blooded organisms with Rachel Krause, Associate Professor of Biology at CMU, in soouthern Africa. The flexible environment at CMU, Warkentin says, enabled him to balance a three-week international research trip with his other coursework. "I feel like it was really a good example of what CMU can offer," he says. "You'd never have this sort of experience at a larger university." Warkentin, accompanied by Krause, joined researchers connected to the Locally Led Indigenous Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation in Zimbabwe (LINCZ) project, a Global Affairs Canada-funded initiative focused on climate resilience and biodiversity in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). At CMU, May is Research Month, where stories from students and faculty who have done incredible research through CMU will be highlighted. Part of the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, Klassen-Wiebe's book offers a thoughtful and cohesive reading of James. On International Workers' Day, CMU celebrates the hard work and dedication of workers across the globe. One way that CMU supports workers is by preparing students for their careers with Work-Integrated Learning, or WIL, through the Ens Centre for Career and Vocation. As part of their CMU degrees, students must complete a placement at an organization that is relevant to their studies. In both their placements and in their WIL courses, students reflect on workers' rights and what it means to seek just work for all people. Since the program's start over 20 years ago, 1,400 CMU students have completed WIL placements at more than 500 different organizations around the world. "When I first stepped into the Bachelor of Music program at CMU, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect—music theory, extensive practice, and plenty of performance. What I didn’t expect were the lessons that would shape me as both a musician and a person. " In her myCMUlife Blog, Bachelor of Music Therapy student Jessi Lopez reflects on the last two years of her music studies, and gives four pieces of advice for her younger self entering the program. Jessi's blog is a thoughtful reflection on how CMU has shaped her love for music through friendships and invigorating lessons. Read Jessi's full blog through the link in the bio.
