Liquid Liquid intuitively rewired Steve Reich’s repetitive sensibilities for the burgeoning hip-hop generation.
They wield an outsize influence considering a relatively meagre catalogue. ‘Cavern’ is obviously their calling card, but ‘Lock Groove (Out)’ is also well ahead of its time, with its languid, dark minimalism.

Hugely important musician from Benin, who sang in a variety of languages and played in dozens of styles.
It’s his latin leaning work that always gets me, and the winner here is ‘La Musica En Verité’.

A curious 12” that somehow manages to be both a post-punk, as well as Loft, classic.
Driven by Wobble’s thunderous bassline, a clattering drum box, and rasps of French Horn played by Holger Czukay, it’s an unlikely combination that somehow makes perfect sense.
Hearing David Mancuso drop this at the first London Loft party 25 years ago was a beautiful thing!

One away solo LP from Ra affiliate Ronnie Boykins on ESP.
Deep, mournful & lyrical, with Boykins switching between plucked and bowed double bass, underpinning fluid horn arrangements.
A clean copy had evaded me for many years until @markwimmers came through a while back 🌞
