Christine Mangosing, a Manila-born and Toronto-based graphic designer, had the opportunity to visit us last week and see her artwork sama-sama * sala-sala premiere on the Kipnes Lantern to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. In her own words, that’s how the day went: « It is such an honour to share this deeply personal reflection on culture and community with the NAC. To be here in person to see what I’ve worked so closely on displayed at such an enormous scale on the Lantern and the screens inside the centre, and even on the lanyards worn by the staff is a defining moment for me both personally and professionally. The folks at the NAC have been such a dream to work with from the very start and welcomed me so warmly. Quel moment marquant, tant sur le plan personnel que professionnel, que d’être sur place pour voir cette œuvre sur laquelle j’ai mis tant d’effort être affichée à si grande échelle sur la Lanterne et les écrans à l’intérieur du Centre, et même sur les cordons portés par le personnel! 𝔰𝔞𝔪𝔞-𝔰𝔞𝔪𝔞 * 𝔰𝔞𝔩𝔞-𝔰𝔞𝔩𝔞 —————— 2024 Commissioned by the National Arts Centre @nac.cna Motion by: Stéphanie Paiement Music by: @alauna_music sama-sama * sala-sala was conceived as a living tapestry that weaves together the past — drawing connections to my ancestors known and unknown; my present — as a member of the Filipino diaspora, an immigrant uprooted from one colonized land to another; and the future —leaving space for what’s to come and reflecting on what we will leave behind. The work pays homage to Indigenous weaving and tattoo traditions from the central and northern regions of Luzon, and Panay Island, where I am descended from. Rooted in the concept of kapwa — the “intuitive recognition that we are part of a shared identity” (@sikodiwa ) the interwoven fibres serve as an apt representation for the interconnectedness of community, and the interdependence of our collective futures. As a sacred tradition and artform, the act of weaving and the resulting works are not considered individual creations in Indigenous Filipino tradition, but the work of the collective consciousness. The symbols, patterns and motifs I reference in this work all hold deep meaning for the people from which they come from and are shared here in tribute to their principles and beliefs. In a dream life, I would read and design book covers all day long... 💭 Since that’s not real life (sigh), luckily once in a blue moon I get to do a bookcover for @playcanpress . It was an absolute honour and pleasure to work on this for Marjorie Chan’s haunting play “Lady Sunrise” — a retelling of the 1936 play “Sunrise” by Chinese playwright Cao Yu — set in modern day Vancouver and Hong Kong. Creative work outside of my 9-5 is almost non-existent, thus the cobwebs in this account. I really do need to change that (Do I say this every year? Yes, yes I do.) and remind myself that “creative work” doesn’t need to mean finished, polished works.
