Join us this Saturday, May 16 from 4-7pm to celebrate the opening of ‘Riverbraids’, an exhibition by Dallas-based artist Katie Miller, 2026 Cluley Projects Open Call Winner.
Across textiles, printmaking, and metalwork, Miller’s practice explores the physical and poetic applications of weaving. Inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s essay ‘The Blue of Distance’, the artist uses indigo dye, fibers, found objects, and cyanotype to create works that consider connection to the natural and metaphysical world.
Balancing precision with chance, Miller’s woven works mirror the fluid structures of rivers and ecological systems. Through intuitive material experimentation, ‘Riverbraids’ reflects on thresholds, memory, loss, and our relationship to the sublime.
An exclusive reading by 2026 Cluley Projects Arts Writing Mentorship recipient Jillian Wendel will take place during the opening reception, featuring their newly commissioned text “Love Is a Dog From Hell” created in conjunction with Miller’s solo presentation.

Cluley Projects is delighted to announce Dallas-based writer, Jillian Wendel, as the winner of the second annual Arts Writing Mentorship! ✨
Wendel will receive one-on-one mentorship from on-staff writer Harrison Blake, culminating in the publication of a text responding to and supporting the work of Katherine Miller, winner of the fifth annual Cluley Projects open call. In addition they will receive an honorarium of $500 and present their publication in an exclusive reading at the opening of Miller’s exhibition in May 2026.
Jillian Wendel (b. 2001, Wichita Falls, TX) graduated with their MA in Art Education in 2025 from the University of North Texas in Denton, where she also received a BA in Art History and Philosophy in 2023.
Over the last three years, they have curated and organized over a dozen exhibitions across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 2024, they founded The Shed Show, a backyard project space in Denton dedicated to exhibiting local artists. She is an author for Glasstire and an experienced press release writer.
They have been featured in numerous exhibitions at PRP (2025); Dallas Contemporary (2025, 2024); Easyside (2024); Arts Fort Worth (2023), and Cora Stafford Gallery (2022). Recently, Wendel was awarded a micro-grant from the Greater Denton Arts Council and received honors from the Dallas Observer for Best Miniature Art Gallery. Wendel lives and works between Denton and Dallas, TX.

For the second time, the winning Cluley Projects Open Call exhibition will be displayed at Erin Cluley Gallery’s main location in the Design District.

Katherine Miller (b. 2001) is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and BFA graduate from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Fibers.
Her work collages iterative and intuitive rituals of weaving, printmaking and natural dye to explore our relationship to the natural world through the material and the ephemeral. Influenced by signs and symbols of the occult. Miller’s practice poses craft as a tool for spiritual resilience and as a means of entry to eclipsed systems.
She has exhibited work across Maryland, North Texas, and South Florida. Miller currently lives and works in Dallas, TX.

Closing out our countdown to this year’s Annual Artist and Art Writer Open Call deadline, we’re highlighting Chukwudi Ukonne, inaugural recipient of the Cluley Projects Arts Writing Mentorship.
Earlier this year, Ukonne’s essay In Constant Translation: Leili Arai Tavallaei’s tender archive of memory was published in conjunction with Tavallaei’s exhibition Shotor 〇 Morghe — marking the first collaborative publication produced through the Arts Writing Mentorship. Guided by Cluley Gallery’s Press Release Writer Blake Bathman, Ukonne developed his text over several months, culminating in a public reading at the exhibition’s opening.
Since the mentorship, Ukonne has had an essay published with Glasstire, exhibited work in Apophenia at ICOSA Gallery in Austin, and begun a residency at Arts Mission Oak Cliff, where he is preparing a hybrid exhibition titled The Space Between. His continued work explores collaboration across artists, galleries, and writers — a pursuit that began through his time with Cluley Projects.

We’re continuing our countdown to this year’s Annual Artist and Art Writer Open Call deadline with a look back at past recipients.
Earlier this year, Leili Arai Tavallaei presented her solo exhibition ‘Shotor 〇 Morghe’ at Erin Cluley Gallery — marking the first Cluley Projects Open Call presentation to be hosted at the main gallery. Through printmaking, assemblage, and painting, Tavallaei wove together Iranian and Japanese cultural traditions, creating a tender archive of family memory and emotional inheritance. Her exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue featuring a new essay by Chukwudi Ukonne, the inaugural recipient of the Cluley Projects Arts Writing Mentorship.
Since her exhibition, Tavallaei has been named Artist in Residence with the Museum of Asian Texans, received the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art, and led studio workshops at the Crow Museum of Asian Art. Her recent film was included in the Transfiguration International Film Festival in Baltimore, and she will serve as a juror for Painted Minarets, a platform supporting young Muslim artists.

In 2024, Jacquelin Zazueta and Zak Ziebell presented their collaborative exhibition ‘To Weep into Stones are Fables’ at Cluley Projects. Through sculpture and painting, the artists explored mythology, oral histories, and material memory embedded in Texan and Mexican cultures — transforming digital processes into tactile landscapes of folklore and form.
Since their exhibition, both artists have continued to expand their practices. Zazueta recently presented a solo show at Pond Gallery in Fayetteville, AR, and together they co-founded Amema, a jewelry studio that bridges digital precision with the poetry of forgotten things, transforming found objects into wearable stories that echo their shared interest in history, craft, and transformation.

In 2023, Sarita Westrup presented her solo exhibition ‘a tender line’ at Cluley Projects, exploring landscape, migration, and belonging through sculptural basketry forms that merge craft traditions with contemporary sculpture.
Since her exhibition, Westrup’s practice has continued to evolve. She was featured in Flow States Triennial at El Museo in New York City, completed a one-year residency at Penland School of Craft, and received the Western North Carolina Crafting Futures Cohort Grant from the Center for Craft in Asheville. In April 2025, she presented her first solo exhibition with Erin Cluley Gallery, ‘continuous nurture’, and is now represented by the gallery.
Now based in western North Carolina, Westrup maintains an active studio practice, weaving sculptural forms that connect material, memory, and place.

We’re counting down the weeks to this year’s Annual Artist and Art Writer Open Call deadline with a look back at past winners.
Starting at the beginning, our inaugural season introduced a presentation by Beronica Gonzales. In her 2022 solo exhibition Lying in Squares, Gonzales explored identity and memory through intimate depictions of familiar moments, objects, and spaces - transforming hand-me-down materials into soft memorials that preserve the traces of daily life.
Since her exhibition, Beronica’s practice has continued to expand. She has been featured twice in New American Paintings, received the Clare Hart DeGolyer Memorial Fund Award from the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Horn Scholarship to attend Penland School of Craft. Most recently, she completed a residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin through the Contemporary at Blue Star. Gonzales now lives and works in Chicago, pursuing her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
