What a fantastic year we have had working beneath this beautiful mural in Rowe Arts. Designed and painted by Charlotte-based artists Elle Esquivel (@elesq ) and Chris Nichol (@chrisnicholart ) last summer, (H)OURS has been our backdrop for nearly a year. As we approach the end of this spring semester, it will be hard to say goodbye. Thank you, Elle and Chris, for allowing your work to inspire us throughout the year. This summer, we will be working with London-based artist Mark Titchner (@marktitchner ) to create a new mural in Rowe as part of the upcoming exhibition 'Holding a Bright Untroubled Sky: Visioning a Better World Through Magic.' This exhibition, curated by writer and folklorist Dr. Amy Hale (@amyhale93 ), will feature 15 international artists and collectives whose creations encourage us to imagine a brighter future. "The first step toward a beautiful new world lies within each of us, and the artists in this exhibition want to help plant those first seeds through inspiring joy, connection and wonder, helping us all to become visionary co-creators of our shared future." Stay tuned for more about the mural and the exhibition! @clt_coaa

This semester, a CTCM (Interdisciplinary Thinking & Communication) class led by Jessi Morton (@jessiraemorton ) visited Rowe Galleries and the 58th Annual Juried Student Exhibition to learn more about visual literacy. Their assignment: to slow down, spend time really looking at a work of art, and respond to what you see. One group of students from that class imported data from student works and created an interactive virtual opportunity for anyone to view and comment on pieces form the show. Copy and paste the link below to view their project and be sure to comment on your favorite piece(s). And, remember to slow down, really look, and enjoy the work. So very cool! /tpeople5/rowe-art-gallery-exhibit-fu4us8um4p133s2m @clt_coaa

We are so grateful for Sean Caulfield's visit last week. Between conducting print demos for students and discussing his work (and showcasing his musical talents) at the reception for 'A Tragedy of the Commons,' Caulfield left us inspired and reenergized. If you haven't had a chance to see Caulfield's work in 'A Tragedy of the Commons,' there's still time. The exhibition will remain on view at @cltduboiscenter through April 15. Thanks for everything, Sean! @caulfield143 @clt_coaa

Join us next week! On Wednesday, March 18, we'll host a celebratory reception for Sean Caulfield's exhibition 'A Tragedy of the Commons.' This exhibition is made up of large-scale text and image linocut, inkjet, and silkscreen prints created by artist Sean Caulfield in collaboration with Susan Colberg (typography) and Steven Hoffman (text). Accompanying these linocuts are a selection of sculptures with printed elements, made from reused/found wood, which speak to the forms and themes within the prints. In developing imagery for this project, Caulfield looked to several sources for inspiration, including historic woodcuts from the Northern Renaissance, as well as more contemporary sources such as the illustrations of Dr. Seuss, comics and manga. In this way the exhibition also thematically considerers the history of illustration and European printmaking and the ways these histories have been intertwined with politics, religion, art, activism, propaganda and colonialism. Plan to arrive at @cltduboiscenter by 6pm and enjoy the free food and bar before we hear from the artist around 6:30. This is sure to be one to remember. @caulfield143 @clt_coaa @unccharlotte

Now on view in Rowe Side Gallery! @unccharlotte alumna Laura Lucas (@lauralucasart ) presents 'The Walls Have Ears,' an exhibition of 17 paintings exploring liminal spaces and the quiet tension of life’s in-between moments. Influenced by film noir, Lucas dramatizes everyday scenes to highlight their emotional resonance. In her painting process, Lucas uses her photographs as references, then builds up layers of paint slowly, often glazing and dry brushing oil paint to create a softer visual effect, reminiscent of the visual quality of old films and photographs. Lucas earned her BFA in Painting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2023. Her works were recently included in 'Fractures and Repair,' a group exhibition at Thornback Gallery in Greenville, SC. She currently works as an Instructor and Assistant Instructor in Charlotte, NC. Join us on March 4, 5:30-7:30 in Rowe Arts for a reception, when we will also be celebrating this year's Juried Student Exhibition. Free food and inspiration provided! @clt_coaa
