In Morgan Johnson’s second grade classroom, curiosity is encouraged, mistakes are part of the process, and one small word carries a lot of power: “yet.”
An adored Lower School teacher and Latin alumna (class of 2009), Johnson creates a classroom environment where students feel safe to try, fail, grow, and discover confidence in themselves along the way. From “Give and Get” morning meetings and collaborative dinosaur books to idiom parades and “contraction surgery,” her classroom is filled with joy, creativity, and connection.
“I always tell students that my favorite word in the dictionary is ‘yet,’” Johnson said. “By this time in the year, if one of them says, ‘I can’t do this,’ the student sitting next to them will say, ‘You can’t do that 𝑦𝑒𝑡.’”
In our latest Spotlight feature, Johnson reflects on returning to the school that shaped her, the teachers who pushed her to grow, and the privilege of helping second graders become confident, curious learners themselves.

DYNASTY MODE 🏆🏆🏆🏆
4 straight State Championships.
Numerous school and state records.
Top 20 team in the country.
The BEST team to ever play at Latin.
Hawks capped it off with a school record 33-shot victory, finishing at 15-under par (561) over two days. Absolute dominance.
What makes this team even more special is who they are off the course. Tough, humble, high-character young men that represented Latin the right way every single day. Proud of this group.
Celebrating Year 2 of the Young Women’s Leadership Program! 💙
On April 21, we celebrated the conclusion of another meaningful year of the Young Women’s Leadership Program, which pairs Latin alumnae with junior and senior female students for a year of mentorship, connection, and growth.
Our end-of-year celebration featured an inspiring conversation with Cameron Hall Wagner ’90, Chief Client Officer at Elevate, and Sydnor Gammon ’07, Principal at Oxeon, who shared honest reflections on their journeys, leadership lessons, and the importance of building meaningful relationships along the way.
Thank you to our incredible mentors, students, and speakers for making this year so special.

For 26 years, Richard Harris has helped Charlotte Latin students experience literature far beyond the page — cultivating curiosity, cultural literacy, empathy, and community in his classroom.
This week, that impact was recognized as he received the 2026 CATO Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award from the Arts & Science Council @asccharlotte , one of just three educators across the eleven-county Charlotte region to be honored.
Known for immersive, cross-curricular teaching and the literary moments he creates for students and colleagues alike, Mr. Harris has helped shape the culture of learning at Latin for more than two decades.
Congratulations on this incredibly well-deserved recognition!

For more than three decades, Fay Lucas and Kay Rigo have been part of the secret engine behind Charlotte Latin School.
As Custodial Supervisor and Events Coordinator for Set-Up, the twin sisters have spent decades helping keep campus running — often behind the scenes, always with deep care for this community. “Nothing happens on campus without the presence of Fay and Kay,” says Head of School Chuck Baldecchi.
This summer, their remarkable tenure at Latin will come to a close as they retire after 33 and 38 years, respectively. In a new Spotlight feature, Fay and Kay reflect on the relationships, memories, wisdom, and shared purpose that shaped their time at Latin — and the legacy they leave behind.
