Putting the finishing touches on a woven piece requires delicate movements and lots of patience 😹 I love this piece though, the leaves were picked off a friends tree during a craft night. Four of us worked on it together as I showed them how to set up a warp and pull threads for the weft. The leaves are woven into the piece, exposing the warp fibers which support it
Hey Philly friends! I’ll be exhibiting some oil works and sculpture tonight alongside pieces by the wonderful @meghansismourart at the Perch from 6-9pm! Our show will be on display until December 20th by appointment! If you’re around tonight though come through, we’d love to see you!
The lovely folks over at @hudsonvalleyseedco are doing a giveaway of two of my prints and original studies on vellum in one go! If you’re interested, check out their latest post for more info, and while you’re at it take a peek at all the other fantastic seed pack designs, the variety is fantastic (just like the seeds themselves). 🌱🌱

Wamsutta (Frank B. James) was a Wampanoag elder and activist who established the National Day of Mourning in 1970, an annual protest on Thanksgiving to honor Native ancestors and educate the public on the oppression of indigenous people since the Plymouth landing in 1620. Invited to speak at a celebration commemorating the arrival of settlers, his speech, highlighting the reality and scope of the Indigenous struggle, was considered too inflammatory and censored. Refusing to take part, he lead the first influential protest instead.
.
I wish that everyone who celebrates today has time to gather with family and/or peacefully reflect on what they’re grateful for. I also urge to remember that for many this holiday is not a point of celebration at all. I urge you to remember the land you’re on, and to never forget its painful history. Please support Indigenous creators, and take the time to educate yourself about/honor Indigenous resistance!

Warmest wishes 🍁

”Cassiopeia & Crew”
.
Started rereading @trivuong ‘s ”Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn” comic and forgot how much I loved this story! Tough to choose favorites but these guys and their background in particular were fascinating. This was supposed to be a sketch... naturally I got too excited in the process. Please check the comic out on Webtoon!

Day 7: Crown, “Kappa”
.
Couldn’t feel good about finishing these prompts without fitting my favorite yokai in somewhere! I figured the kappa’s hair surrounding it’s water-dish head (see fig. 2) could look crown-ish from an angle. These guys have some weird stories and are fairly morally dubious, yet they still manage to be endearing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 5: Darkness, “Ray Cats”
.
Here’s a wild interpretation of the prompt, but bear with me: One of the most interesting articles I’ve read recently discussed the study of “nuclear semiotics” a field of scientists and linguists tasked with finding ways to warn those far into the future, millennias ahead, of the danger of nuclear waste sites. Considering the uncertain future of our written languages surviving that far ahead, other approaches to signage have been pitched, such as erecting objectively hostile architecture in these locations, or carefully breeding cats to change color in the presence of radioactivity. The intention of the latter idea was/is to implement the warning role of these “ray cats” into stories, solidify them in tradition, and create legends to grow and pass on through generations- all so that people in the distant future will be culturally cautioned to avoid tampering with these wastelands.
.
Darkness, as an uncertainty of what lies ahead, seemed like the most suitable space to illustrate this. I definitely stretched the prompt as far as possible, but while we understandably pour over folktales of the past, utilizing this power of communication in a future sense is such a fascinating concept to me.

Day 4: Smoke, ”When Tigers Smoked Pipes”
.
The title is the equivalent of ”once upon a time” for Korean folktales and I find it infinitely more interesting- a story in and of itself. The tiger is also revered- intertwined in Korean folklore and once thought to ”embody the spirit of the mountains”, recalling a time when they did exist amongst their mountain ranges. I took this pretty literally, imagining the body like a rock face, surrounded by clouds created from the smoke of its own pipe.

Day 3: Path, “Fairy Trance”
.
Fairy dancing draws in a curious child with uncertain results. Cutting it /really close/ but for today’s prompt I imagined a fairy path, or ring in this case, in which there are plenty of tales of trickery associated.

Day 2 - Secret, “Seal Maiden”
.
I stretched this prompt as an excuse to draw a selkie, as their lives seem to be steeped in secrets; their human form is vulnerable if discovered and their sealskin stolen, for as long as it is kept hidden, they’re bound to the land.
