If I had to choose one singular author as my favorite author of all time, I think it would be her. She writes about the human condition in a way that’s almost startling in its accuracy and realness. Her books are so rich, the richest books I’ve ever had to read, so many layers and she shows the humanity in all her characters. None of her books are easy but they’re also not heavy in the same way.
I have so much to say about each of her books but i don’t want this post to be three pages long, if you want to get into her (which I hope everyone does because she’s the best), dm me and we can talk about what book might be the best for you to start with depending on your interests. Or just go in blind and wait to be pleasantly surprised, whatever works.
All that to say, follow her, buy and read her books, read her essays on Substack!!
Today, I wanted to share my favorite authors and honestly, I think I’m going to make individual posts for all of them because I have so much to say about how much and why I adore their writing and what their books mean to me. Not to be dramatic, but they have all contributed to making me the person I am and for that I will forever be grateful.
I added a star to my favorite books by them, but it was hard to choose one from each when they all have hits and no misses. I also made sure to tag them all to encourage you guys to check them out if you haven’t already.
Some entertaining books and some meh books.
The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity: 5 ⭐️ my highest rating of the year so far. It really reminded me of home and how community really sustains a people. I need to lock in and get to braiding sweetgrass.
Lost lambs: 4.75 ⭐️ actually so so fun. I had a great time and it was sooo funny.
Women without men: 3.75 ⭐️ i understand and respect what the author was doing but it fell a little flat for me and I didn’t feel like I connected with the characters the way I wanted to. And I kept comparing it to ‘So long a letter’ which is such an amazing book that was written during the same time period and felt more revolutionary than this one to me.
Yesteryear: 3.75⭐️ was the MC a pick me racist psychopath? Yes. Was I entertained? Yes. I think I’m hesitant about rating it higher because I felt like I was feeling a little too much of the author’s hatred for trad wives in the book and I just feel a bit weird about it also just tired of white people talking about white people things. (Happy to discuss in DMs)
Hera: 2.25 ⭐️ this was sooo boring, rip
‘Spring dump’ but it was definitely 9°C in Boston today. But anyways, I am blasting @rosalia.vt and trying to have a good time and no one can stop me :))))
On this week side quest, I present: sip (bottled water) and paint :))) I had a great time, it was much needed during this emotional rollercoaster of a week I just had. Sometimes you just need your besties and a paintbrush!
Happy Sunday! The past few days have been quite fun for me. I went to the LANY concert in Boston, and it was amazing. I watched the drama which had me cackling and rewatched project Hail Mary which made me cry (again). I finally unboxed and tested my new gouache paint set. I finished my first 5 stars read of the year, and started lost lambs and have been enjoying it a lot so far. :))))
My first 5 stars of the year, everybody clap please. I’ve been fighting for my life lowkey. So many books came close but didn’t pass my threshold for 5 stars but finally FINALLY. Please recommend your recent 5 stars so I can check them out!!!
A very James Baldwin centered month. It took me a long time to read any of his work because I was intimidated and thought they were going to be very hard to follow but they are not at all.
I have so many thoughts about Giovanni’s room if someone wants to yap about them with me. Because THAT was one hell of a ride
