《Paper Forms: Flat Becoming Form》
LI CHIA MAN Solo Exhibition @lichiaman
Date : 3/28 (Sat.)-5/31(Sun.)
Opening :3/28 (Sat.) 2pm
location: Cloud Forest Gallery
Artist Statement
The starting point for this exhibition came from a series of paper-cutting works made in 2025. Using sheets of colored paper, the artist randomly cut out symbols drawn from everyday life — flowers, birds, fruit, shoes, and facial expressions representing different emotions. These flat images were then transformed into three-dimensional ceramic works, where varying color combinations and viewing angles generate multiple compositions and imaginings.
Viewed from the front, the pieces resemble an open book; at a 45-degree angle, a trompe-l’œil shadow appears; and from the back, the forms condense into a single, complete silhouette — so that the image shifts fluidly between the flat and the three-dimensional. Each work can function equally as a decorative object woven into daily life or as a practical, functional vessel.
The paper-cut forms also serve as stencils for surface prints, where repeated overlapping arrangements give rise to new emotional loops and points of release. For the artist, this process is like assembling a puzzle — beginning with scattered fragments and gradually piecing together a landscape. Running throughout the works are recurring motifs of plant stems and vines, threading between different objects and across flat and volumetric surfaces, linking symbol to symbol. They are at once an extension of perception and a guide to the act of making.

Sama in the Forest Documentary Screening Event Announcement
Sama in the Forest ( 2023 / Maithili, English / 75 mins )
She walked into the forest — and could never return the same.
Sama in the Forest (2023, 75 mins) is a hybrid documentary set in contemporary Mithila, India — a land where myth and modernity collide. Here, the renowned Mithila painting tradition and orally transmitted folktales are the language through which women carry culture across generations.
The film weaves together women telling different versions of the Sama legend, the making of intricate narrative paintings, dramatic re-enactments, a yearly festival, and candid conversations about what these stories mean today — and who gets to tell them.
At its heart: the girls and women of the Mithila Art Institute, and a community navigating the tensions of gender, caste, and a changing world.
Come watch. Come listen. Come be moved.

Cloud Forest Studio is bringing back its Children’s Art Summer Camp, designed for kids ages 7–12 who want to spend their summer making things, exploring, and discovering what art can do.
Over four days, campers will shape clay figurines and bells, forage for plants and turn them into nature prints, craft mixed-media mirrors, take on a science experiment, try their hand at wheel throwing, and paint a portrait of their favorite furry friend. Every day looks different, and every piece belongs entirely to the child who made it.
Our studio sits right beside a national park, giving kids a chance to draw inspiration straight from nature. Each instructor is a working artist in their own field, and healthy, low-allergen lunches are included throughout — so parents can relax while the kids dive in.
Spots are limited to 10 per session, so feel free to share this with anyone who might be interested!
Session 1: June 29 – July 2 | Registration deadline: June 22
Session 2: August 10–13 | Registration deadline: August 3

Join us on May 1 for this one day workshop and conversation with ecological artist Peri Lee about our ceramic materials, extractive legacies, and local sourcing.
We will go over the ecological, social, and health costs of accessing ceramic materials, wild harvest local materials for clays and glazes, learn to make glaze triaxils, and discuss the implications of our material selection. You will have the opportunity to make test tiles to be picked up at a future date.
If possible and desired, please bring 3-5 soil, dirt, rocks, or wild clay samples you wish to experiment with in plastic bags or jars. Be sure to take notes on where you are bringing the soil from- this can be from your yard, a creek, a construction site, etc. Once registered, we will provide more details and instructions!
