MEET THE MUSICIANS THAT MAKE @jazzforallqld
Charlene Cloud Tan (they/them) is Jazz For All’s program designer and multi-faceted musician. Having designed programs since they were in high school when no one else took up the mantle, they have now done so extensively for projects at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Most recently, Cloud has designed the programs for the Conservatorium’s International Women’s Day concert series, "Sounding Resistance".
Cloud is also a globally-recognised composer-ethnomusicologist and Ngee Ann Kongsi Outstanding Young Artist Award winner. Their sonic identity, “filled with curiosity and exploration” (Nicole Murphy), can be seen in their extensive experience in cultural instrumental composition, specialising in oud performance and fusion. Currently, they are making strides in traditional Nusantaran (Malay Archipelago) music for "The Tides of Nusantara" (Seven Seas of Sage).
As a graphic designer for Jazz For All, Cloud will be preparing programs and posters, incorporating Melayna’s work into each design while capturing Chloe’s artistic spirit. Cloud’s program design chops also include Chloe’s Honours Exhibition "Jazz, Gender and the Queer Experience", "YOMAKU" by Emily-Mei Davies and QCGU Composition Cohort concerts from 2024 to 2026.

GIG FOR GAZA: Saturday December 6, KEPK, 2-8pm. All proceeds to UNICEF’s Children of Gaza Crisis Appeal.
As humans who care about other humans, it’s hard to know what to do in the midst of such horror and tragedy. Apart from all the things we’ve already been doing (protests, emailing MPs, talking incessantly about Palestine to anyone who will listen, donating), artists are in a unique position to channel their feelings into their art and share it.
On what will be two years to the day since renowned Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer was killed, we’re grateful to host the premiere of ‘If I Must Die’, composed by Charlene Cloud Tan using the words of Alareer’s haunting poem of the same name. This new work, for oud, voice, two violins, cello and piano, helps to give voice to the voiceless and reminds us that we can *never* stop talking about this genocide.
We hope you’ll come and support all our musicians on Saturday, and join in solidarity as we raise funds for children in Gaza. Ticket link in bio.
There’s such a diverse lineup at Gig for Gaza that there’s something for everyone. There are ticketing options for the whole day or just one act and, remember, 100% of the proceeds are going to Unicef’s Gaza Children Crisis Appeal. Listening to good music while being altruistic… the perfect Saturday!
One of the most exciting performances at GfG will be the premiere of a brand-new work by Charlene Cloud Tan (bio below), who has set If I Die by martyred Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer to music for the Black Square Collective. Cloud will also be performing a solo set earlier in the day.
Charlene Cloud Tan is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and budding ethnomusicologist currently based in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia; pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. One of the many loves of Cloud’s life is the oud, which they picked up when they were sixteen years old, and it has become an integral part of their musical life and practice. Having composed and performed works across three continents, their oeuvre spans from solo to chamber orchestral works, displaying a keen eye for historical context and re-context, and cultural fusion. Mostly described by listeners as “avant-garde”, their pieces involve contemporary classical compositional approaches and methods to do what they plan to do for the rest of their life – tell stories. A keen multidisciplinarist, they have collaborated with creatives in music, dance, visual art, theatre, and film to tell such stories. With a developing interest in ethnomusicology, their practice entrenches and pays homage to cultural and traditions, from instruments to attitudes.

「YOMAKU」♪~(´ε` )
on the 29th of may, my collaborative piece with @j._j._06 was premiered as a part of a body of work entitled "YOMAKU". not only was i super stoked and cheesed to be a part of this, it took me back to when i first met project director emily-mei davies across practice rooms, when i praised her singing of an aria i had done long before, and the reason why james and i became Db major warriors for the better half of april and may. we tried our very best to bring our voices to the table to give YOMAKU our all, and the turnout was unbelievable!!!
without the YOMAKU fusion orchestra, emily-mei's direction, zac's conducting, scarlett's management and every composer, teacher-mentor and involved person's guidance, we would not have brought 「幸せ Happiness」 to life. for that, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! 🎉🎉🎉 you all make me a happy happy hippo!
have these sneaky cheeky pictures (friends credited below) from my presentation + a blurb i wrote for the linked of in 🫣 #portfolio ! an open con student actually came up to me to ask me what video game character's lore i based my first song cycle off of. you're going to have to DM me to get my answer on that because it will not be public information! 👇👇👇
┏(^0^)┛
On the 3rd of July, I presented a slideshow to students of the Open Conservatorium as a part of the Tertiary Prep Workshop "Composing with Nicole Murphy". It was a huge honour to share my experience with them while letting some of my personal and professional interest leak through my presentation! I'd like to thank Nicole and the Open Con team for this opportunity – I really enjoyed myself and it was great looking back on my experiences at the Con thus far 🤗 🎶
