Time for a winter refresh 🌲❄️🧤 This window box is planted and decorated with evergreen herbs and locally grown wintergreens, stems, berries, and cones. Bonus, the winterberries are a great food source for native birds! #phillygardener #phillygardens #shopsmall #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal

At first glance, it’s hard to believe that the Dawn Redwood is actually a living fossil. The last living species of the genus Metasequoia was thought to be extinct until the early 1940s when it was rediscovered in central China. However, this fast-growing, deciduous tree is still endangered in its wild range due to deforestation. We like to use the fallen needles from the Dawn Redwood as an autumn mulch in garden beds 🍂 #phillygardens #redwooddawn #metasequoia #livingfossil #phillygardener

These aren’t popcorn or candy, so don’t eat them! They are scale insects, a common garden pest. The females (pictured here) stay put on stems and produce eggs under their marshmallowy covering. We like to manage scale insects by simply picking them off the plant. #phillygardening #phillygardener #phillyplants

These New England Asters are a popular late-blooming perennial that provide color well into November. Even better, they’re native and pollinators love them! We took this photo at a client’s yard just last week. 💐 #phillygardens #phillyplants #phillygardeners

Ever wonder why leaves turn color in the fall? 🍂 Changes in day length and temperature signal to plants that it’s time to start “bedding down” for the winter. Green pigments in the leaves are broken down and reabsorbed by the plant for reuse in the spring. The red, yellow and orange pigments are actually always there, but aren’t visible while leaves are green 🍁 #phillygardener #phillyplants #phillygardens

Fun Fact Friday: Hydrangea ‘flowers’ are composed of sepals, not true petals. They are actually colorful leaves that surround the tiny flowers! #phillygardens #growwithus #hydrangeas

Textured cast stone planters are some of our favorites to use when installing irrigation for low maintenance projects. This one houses a variety of perennials and honeysuckle vine - a favorite of hummingbirds! #growwithus #supportlocal #planter #plantergarden #irrigation

You wouldn’t know at first glance, but this garden bed is full of Wine Cap mycelium! We provided the fungi with lots of straw and hardwood mulch so that it can produce big burgundy mushrooms. 🍄 #growwithus #phillygardeners #phillygardens #winecapmushrooms #mycelium #mushroom
