As I’m rediscovering myself, I wanted to share this letter that my Aunt Cheryl sent me. She is the first person my parents trusted to leave me with and I stayed with her when I was a baby/kid on the weekends for a couple years before she moved away back to Texas. She had a huge impact on my life, I can’t even describe, but this just gives some light into who I am today and kind of gives more background on me as a kid, and why I am the way I am.
Cheryl Dawn Dyer was an artist / photographer and scene maker. Introduced to my parents by Michael Roman, she was a vital key to the Austin Texas indie music scene, which she brought over to New York. For decades she was responsible for doing shows and booking bands at venues like CBGB’s and the Pyramid Club. A close confident and inspirational force to The Butthole Surfer from their inception. She went on tour as a photographer with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and did the album cover for Cop Shoot Cop “Ask Question Later” that lent inspiration to Richard Kern to use in the music video Room 429. She had the eye to see the spark in people before everyone else did.
I was lucky enough to be apart of her rich history of doing amazing things and to have her as my godmother in my life. She used to live above 14 Street & 2nd Ave. Right above the now KFC and I have memories of some really cool ass experiences with her in that apartment. She just told me she projected Un Chien Andalou off her roof onto the building across the street and without knowing, I told her it is the inspiration behind my clocks. A real full circle moment for us. This is kind of an appreciation post for her as someone that shaped my life and who I am today as I spend some time with myself and get back to my essence. The Lower East Side has always brought people from all over the world together to find their tribe. I guess I was always born to be a wild child surrealist haha
