this post is about half a year late to the party but I wanted to share the piece I performed this past summer for @pdxpqa 's variety show! the spoken word piece, "(re)birth of (herm)aphrodite," is an ekphrastic poem I wrote in response to an 1877 painting in which a male model, alessandro di marco, was used as the reference for the goddess aphrodite in a painting of her emergence from the sea. felt a little trans to me but I might be biased. the piece was accompanied by some incredible interpretive movement choreographed and performed by @kylee_killian . this piece and show meant a lot to me and it was super fun to dabble in some spoken word as a medium I don't do super often - hope you enjoy! :) 🦋
aurelia, aka tully, my dear friend and one of the kindest, wisest, and most magical people the world has ever known, passed away last week. i wanted to take a moment here to share just a few photos from the wonderful memories i have with her, and to ask everyone who may see this to take a moment for this utterly wonderful human being - to grieve her, to remember her, and to thank her for her infinite creativity and grace.
in high school, i knew aurelia as a quiet but immensely talented writer and artist whose work i always admired from afar. in college, i knew her as my roommate of two years, and quickly as one of my closest friends. over the past five years i saw tully’s confidence and talent grow as she bloomed beautifully into her personhood. we shared tea each morning and told each other our dreams. we jumped into rivers and shared picnics and wrote papers and laughed and went to the sea and watched strange films. she made incredible prints and poems for her friends and knitted me a tea cozy. i loved her about as hard as anyone can love anyone, and i know a great many people felt the same.
sweet tully, it’s going to take me a long time to understand how or why you’re gone. how you could be gone so soon, when we still had hot air balloons to ride in and more dreams to tell one another. but i will love you so, so fiercely, forever. we shared so much wonder together. & to quote a film we watched together a great many times - no sorrow will live in me as long as that joy.
i love you. i miss you. goodbye, for now. ❤️
