All About Novellas 💬 What’s your favourite novella? I don’t tend to read novellas often. Match My Flowers Stack 💬 What are you doing this weekend? Today I went on a London bookstore crawl with some friends! We went to Main Character Books, which I loved—partly because of the amazing selection of books, partly because they serve cake from my favourite bakery, Luminary Bakery. Then we went to Gower Street Waterstones, where I got some books for rebinds. Lastly, we went to Daunt Books, and I picked up a poetry book as well as an adorable mini Daunt tote. Tomorrow I’ll be meeting a friend for coffee and doing some more rebinding—I’m currently working on ‘The Knight and the Moth’. Tom Roberts Appreciation Post 💬 Who’s your favourite cover artist? After receiving an ARC of A Snake Among Swans by @hanfrankan , I realized I’d never done an appreciation post for my favourite cover artist, @tomrobertsillustration . We all know his incredible work on the Fallen Gods trilogy—the cover of Godkiller is iconic! But I’ve been lowkey obsessed with Tom’s work for ages. So much so that he designed the amazing covers of books I self-published in 2020. Like, look at them dragons? Could this man be any more talented? Spend a Bookish Day with Me! 💬 What’s the last book event you went to? Last week, I was lucky enough to go to two bookish events honouring the incredible Blood Bound by @ellishunterauthor ! Thursday I went to the launch party and Friday I attended their talk at Waterstones. As ever, the duo was charming and hilarious. If you haven’t read their book yet, please do! I also popped to Daunt Books, where I picked up The Witch by Marie Ndiaye. Then I went to my favourite patisserie in Marylebone, where I had a matcha tiramisu and ume cha while finishing up Second Self. I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys books that reflect on motherhood and the pressure women might feel, both biological and societal, to have children. After that, I met up with @bookventures_of_a_wildflower , who was dressed as Astrid from Blood Bound, at the Piccadilly Waterstones. We grabbed a cocktail (Blue Lagoon in honour of Arturea) before going to hear Katie and Becky talk. 💬 What’s a book you’re nervous to start and why? As you can see, there are a few on my list! The most likely thing to make me nervous about a book is hype. I feel like I’ve been burned by overhyped books so many times and that it’s better for me to just trust my gut feeling with books. Robin Hobb…are we breaking up? 💬 What series have you loved overall but struggled with an individual book of? No, I’d never break up with Robin Hobb, I’ll be loyal till the end of the Realm of the Elderlings. But, I have to say that the penultimate series, The Rain Wild Chronicles, really didn’t do it for me. While I cared for some of the characters and plotlines, I couldn’t have cared less about the Dragon Keepers, the Memory Stone, or the dragons themselves. Also, Selden? I just didn’t care. I really didn’t care about his storyline. With the other trilogies, I’ve adored every book. I was surprised this was the case for Liveship Traders, as I’ve never really enjoyed ocean/boat settings. But I could not bring myself to be emotionally invested in about 75% of The Rain Wild Chronicles. Yet I persevered because I am so SO excited to start Fitz and the Fool! May TBR 💬 What’s on your May TBR? I’m excited for my May reads, which include a rare indie pick! I’m usually SUPER reluctant to pick up indie books because I struggle with books that have lots of grammatical errors; unfortunately, that’s been my experience with indie books. But Epilogue of Kings just looked too tempting to pass up! I’ll also be finishing off The Rain Wild Chronicles, which I have mixed feelings about. Having loved the Realm of the Elderlings series thus far, I’ve not really enjoyed this quartet. I’ve already finished City of Dragons and started Blood of Dragons, and I doubt the quartet will do a dramatic turn-around for me. Lastly, All Hail Chaos is coming out this month and I cannot wait to read it!
