Donāt cry often but am oddly susceptible on airplanes, perhaps itās the altitude; anyway I got choked up for the first time about five minutes into the excellent @clementedocumentary , which the goddess Apropos cued up on the inflight service to Pittsburgh. Much sniffling and furtive eye-wiping on the shirt cuff ensued, and then about 2/3 of the way along we came to Clementeās brief, beautiful friendship with Manny Sanguillen and thatās when I began to make my poor seatmate genuinely uncomfortable.

Two šµš·Puerto Rican icons. Two men bigger than baseball.
Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda carried the pride of šµš·Puerto Rico šµš·everywhere they went. They understood what it meant to represent their people, their culture, and the next generation.
Their relationship was built on mutual respect, brotherhood, and a deep love for helping others ā especially kids. Both believed baseball was bigger than stats and awards. It was about opening doors, inspiring youth, and giving hope to communities that needed leadership.
When tragedy struck on December 31, 1972, Clemente boarded a plane delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. What many people donāt know is Orlando Cepeda was also originally expected to be part of that humanitarian tripbut Cepeda just had knee surgery and that held him back. The mission meant that much to both men. They werenāt thinking about fame. They were thinking about people in need.
Clementeās tragic death shook the entire baseball world and devastated Puerto Rico forever, but his legacy never stopped. Cepeda continued carrying that same spirit giving back to youth, mentoring kids, building bridges through baseball, and showing young athletes the importance of character, discipline, and pride in where you come from.
Two Hall of Famers.
Two Puerto Rican legends.
One mission bigger than the game: serving others and inspiring future generations.

Roberto Clemente wasnāt originally a Pirate.
He signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
On February 19, 1954, the Dodgers gave the 19-year-old Puerto Rican outfielder a $10,000 signing bonus ā making him a āBonus Baby.ā
That rule required him to stay on the Major League roster.
If not?
He could be taken for $4,000.
Brooklyn tried to hide him in Montreal.
It didnāt work.
On November 22, 1954, the Pirates paid four grand and changed baseball history.
The rest?
3,000 hits.
15 All-Star selections.
A legacy far bigger than baseball.
Sometimes dynasties are built on small mistakes.
Save this one for trivia night.
