All too often, when discussing creative innovators, certain traits come to the surface. Hustle is a particular favorite, but not far behind are its cousins: tenacity, passion, determination. There also seems to be a direct correlation in the collective American consciousness between the intensity of these traits and the bearer’s connection to New York City, a city founded upon and famous for its hustle. All admirable traits, but when we hear people described in this way, we tend to paint them as superhuman, unattainable, remote. As if their coming into the world were a story already told, their success a fate to be fulfilled. — Words by Trevor Orton Photos by Michael J Spear

Tucked back in the tight alleys of Barcelona’s Gothic District are the finest wonders of urban Catalonia. And we were no strangers to its romance. Just yesterday, we grazed the halls of Picasso’s museum. This morning, we drank gin and watched the flamenco dancers from a blue couch in a dark room. The air was still ripe from the night before; only the cobblestone streets had fewer buskers and drunken lovers. There is rarely a reason to explore Barcelona before noon—every storefront lays idle with a graffitied steel cage rolled down to protect its belongings. But today, we walk through the winding roads to find Beatriz Fabres. — Words by Jordan Philips Photos by Luca Venter

Nestled in the southeast corner of the Alps is a quaint little town by the name of Bassano del Grappa. The Brenta river weaves through its center, connected by picturesque bridges, lined on each side with cafes and shops. You can feel the historic heartbeat in the walls of the Grappa bars where Ernest Hemingway was known to sit, drink, and write. Through town—down winding, tree-lined roads—lies the estate and factory of Montegrappa. — Words: Danielle Lee Photos: Boone Rodriguez

Few individuals are anointed with just the right mix of talent, upbringing, experience, and drive to leave a lasting mark on their industry. Fewer still can focus them in such a way as to shift an entire industry itself. Rajat Parr is one of those people. — Words by Matthew McKenzie Photos by Luca Venter

American indie pop band Tennis hails from landlocked Denver, Colorado. So it’s ironic (or perfectly appropriate?) the duo finds so much inspiration on the open sea. Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley speak openly of such dualities, revealing that these tensions may just be at the very core of what drives them forward. — Words: Colleen Nika Photos: Luca Venter
