CIRCLE Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant | DIFF Premiere Water moves. Through homes. Through systems. Back to the sea. The Circle is an architecture film about the Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant, designed by Clancy Moore Architects. A piece of public infrastructure shaped with precision and clarity. Basins. Flow. Machines. Local voices speak from within the place itself, adding a human layer to the architecture and grounding the film in lived experience. A quiet order works beneath everyday life. The project premiered at Expo 2025 Osaka. Now screening at the Dublin International Film Festival. Commissioned by the Office of Public Works, Ireland. a hiecture: @clancymoore @opwireland sound design: @daniel_aron #TheCircle #Arklow #ClancyMooreArchitects #ArchitectureFilm #WaterInfrastructure PublicWorks IrishArchitecture Expo2025 OsakaExpo DIFF CinematicArchitecture EnvironmentalDesign WaterCycle ArchitectureAndFilm Ireland

For the first lecture of the year, we were visited by Colm Moore from the Irish architecture firm Clancy Moore Architects, which is behind the Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant. This was the final lecture in the series “Bunnen av isfjellet”, where architects were invited to present a single project in depth, exploring all its complexities, premises, and challenges. Throughout the lecture, Moore guided us through a process shaped by strict technical and engineering requirements. The treatment plant is defined by function, logistics, safety, and economy. They reflected on the architect’s capacity within such projects: Where can architectural decisions make a real impact? When asked about the function of the windows in the industrial building, Moore explained that they are there to give the otherwise closed facility a human scale and allow local residents to relate to the building. Thanks for an inspiring lecture, @clancymoore

LECTURE TODAY — Clancy Moore! Date: Thursday, January 15th
Time: 18:00
Where: Josefines gate 34
Language: English Clancy Moore is coming to Arkitektenes hus to take a deep dive into the award-winning project Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Irish architecture firm works with context in a broad sense: the physical surroundings, as well as historical, economic, social, and legal frameworks— and how these factors can give architecture both form and gravitas. The Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant is the result of an invited competition for a treatment facility in Arklow, a town that has long struggled with severe pollution in the river and along the coastline. The central site posed particular challenges, both due to the plant’s visibility and the need to consider the area’s rich animal and plant life. The project was developed in close collaboration with engineers, through a process in which the architect did not necessarily play the leading role. The result is a facility that is both an essential public infrastructure and a striking landmark. We look forward to learning more about the process behind the project—the quiet battles and difficult compromises, but also the constructive forces that ultimately created a significant piece of architecture. A cathedral of crap, as it was described by Oliver Wainwright in The Guardian.

We greatly value all the messages of support we have received since the purchase of The Phoenix last year. We have engaged extensively with the local community and developed a design that we feel holds the spirit of this engagement. We are pleased to announce that we recently lodged our planning application with Kerry County Council for a not-for-profit Arts Centre and cinema on The Phoenix site. We remain committed to ongoing engagement as the process unfolds and all ideas and suggestions are welcome. All positive observations to our planning application, available at www.kerrycoco.ie are encouraged Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas🎄 @clancymoore @brock.mcclure.pd @ymcgprojects @hicksonmary @kerrycountycouncil @kerrys_eye @udarasnag @westmidkerrylive @radiokerry Is mór linn na teachtaireachtaí tacaíochta ar fad a fuaireamar ó cheannaíomar a Phoenix anuraidh. We are delighted to find out that the Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant has been nominated for the EU Mies Award. This is Europes highest award for a built work, awarded every 2 years. While this is our third nomination this feels special - in that ithis project been a vast collaborative effort. Engineers, planners and the wider community working towards a common goal. Contractors who cared and listened. The incredible expertise of everyone we worked with made this project a joy from start to finish. Architecture here arises in the service of many needs - it is a negotiation, a translation. More than this it is part of a story that ameliorates the lives of tens of thousands of people. The fact that our design uses vastly less energy and less CO2 than a conventional design is an aspect we are most proud of. At our ‘Sketching’ session, participants imagined the Phoenix as an “arts village.” This idea has since become central to the project. As Yvonne McGuinness noted in Saturday’s ‘Proposing’ session, for the Phoenix to survive and thrive, it must grow beyond its role as a cinema to become a dynamic cultural village. Laura Brock spoke of how crucial matters such as drainage, logistics and ecology are being sensitively responded to - and of the vast series of technical studies being undertaken to ensure that the project represents best practice in its sensitivity to its neighbours, the environment and the broader ecology of the town and its hinterland. & architect Andrew Clancy presented developed design proposals, showing how building heights have been carefully calibrated to respect surrounding streetscapes. The scheme introduces new, characterful gables that sit comfortably within Dingle’s vibrant patchwork of roofs, yards, and sheds. This is a design rooted in the language of Dingle - its forms, its rhythms, and its spirit. ❤️ @clancymoore @brock.mcclure.pd @ymcgprojects @hicksonmary @kerrycountycouncil @kerrys_eye @udarasnag @westmidkerrylive @radiokerry Ag an seisiún Ag Sceitseáil shamhlaigh rannpháirtithe an Phoenix mar “shráidbhaile ealaíon”. Tá áit lárnach bainte amach ag an gcoincheap seo sa tionscadal ó shin. Mar a dúirt Yvonne McGuinness, chun go mairfidh a Phoenix, ní mór dó fás ó bheith ina phictiúrlann amháin le bheith ina sráidbhaile bríomhar cultúrtha.   Labhair Laura Brock faoin tslí go bhfuiltear ag freagairt ar bhealach íogair do cheisteanna ríthábhachtacha ar nós draenála, loigisticí agus eiceolaíochta, agus faoin sraith thoirtiúil de staidéir theicniúla atá idir lámha chun a chinntiú go mbíonn an tionscadal ag teacht le deachleachtas maidir lena íogaireacht i leith a chomharsan, na timpeallachta, agus éiceolaíocht níos leithne an bhaile agus an cheantair mháguaird. Chuir an t-ailtire Andrew Clancy na moltaí reatha deartha i láthair, ag taispeáint mar a bhfuil airde na bhfoirgneamh curtha in oiriúint ar shlí cháiréiseach do na sráid-dreacha mórthimpeall ar an suíomh...
