It all started with Baxter. 17 years ago, when we were living in Denver for a short while, we found him on a whim at a pet store. He was already 4 months old with a sale tag attached to him. We considered him our rescue puppy because who knows what would have happened if we hadnât come upon him that day. But we were immediately smitten. He was sweet and adorable and so affectionate. Over the years, as weâve accumulated additional companions for Baxter, he remained a constant presence in our lives and in theirs. Always happy and playful, a one-of-a-kind character in his dapper outfits. Gaby is especially missing him already. Weâve been so fortunate to have had Baxter in our lives all these years. He saw us through several moves and changes, and his absence will be felt for a long time. The film The Friend is now available for streaming on HBO/MAX. Based on the 2018 novel by Sigrid Nunez, this was easily one of the best films Iâve seen so far this year. Terrific writing and performances all around, but come awards season, I think the Academy will be hard-pressed to find a more convincing and heart-rendering performance in the Best Supporting Male category than Bingâs, the Great Dane at the center of this film. Powerful acting, after all, isnât always about emotional monologuesâitâs about the ability to effectively listen, observe, and react with authenticity (plus having an exceptional nose for subtext). Bing masters all of these skills, delivering an emotional journey that anchors this deeply satisfying drama without a single line of dialogue. Move over Jacob Elordi, I foresee a remarkable career ahead for this canine. While perhaps not in line for the next Bond franchise, heâd be a standout in a remake of Sleepless in Seattle or My Dinner with Andre. Dog Day Afternoon? Though given his natural gravitas, I suspect Bingâs agent is already fielding calls from Spielberg.
