1. Go to an artist that specializes in the style you’re looking for - you are more likely to get your desired results when researching the artist beforehand
2. Ensuring your artist provides healed pics of their work will help you gain a better understanding of what the piece will look like over time
3. Numbing cream reduces your body’s natural ability to produce serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin in response to injury which results in insufficient pain regulation over long periods of time
4. Different artists may suggest different aftercare methods based upon their specific style. It is best to listen to the artist you went to for the tattoo they gave you.
5. Having a general plan for where you’d like your tattoos placed can make future decisions easier when it comes to building upon what you already have
6. It’s normal not to see the design before the appointment - your artist can make adjustments within reason on the day you come in
7. Just because your artist doesn’t post your tattoo doesn’t mean they don’t like it - factors like glare, swelling and simply being backlogged on posting will affect whether or not you see your piece on social media
8. It is ok to ask for a silent session - there is no pressure to maintain conversation throughout your appointment
9. It is also ok to ask questions. An artist that is frustrated by your questions likely either doesn’t know the answers or doesn’t have the communication skills to explain their process.
10. You don’t have to come to your artist with a completed design - they should be able to create something unique for you based upon the ideas you discuss during a consultation.
“There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness” - Edgar Allan Poe
